About the Congress

The 6th J&K Women Science Congress (JKWSC) will be organized during the month of February 26-28, 2019 with the objective to bring women to the forefront of Science, Technology and Mathematics (STM) in the spectrum of traditional as well as modern sciences. JKWSC is intended to showcase the contribution of women in Science & Technology. This event is designed to spread the understanding of the need to empower women who constitute nearly 50% of the population and involve them effectively in national building activities, tapping their potential as innovators. It has been found that in the recent years Indian women have been constantly striding hard to get cognizance in scientific arena and their recognition in astronomical, physical, chemical and allied sciences has been acknowledged beyond doubt. The real potential of women has changed the stereotypical concepts of vulnerable women to a modern strong super woman where they are handling both domestic and professional affairs equally well. JKWSC will serve to expose students to the scientific concepts recognize and channelize women's capabilities, their career choices, and motivate them to take up a career in science. This event will create awareness, popularize and inculcate mathematical & scientific temper among women.

About the Host Institution

Govt. P. G. College for Women Gandhi Nagar, Jammu, is one of the leading NAAC Re-accredited A Grade, Star College institutions of J&K, established in the year 1969. Recently, it has become one of the constituent college of Cluster university of Jammu. The College is a premier educational institution empowering women scholar to face the challenges of life in every possible way. In present times education means much more than merely acquiring academic knowledge, so college aims to promote promising young women and enable them to rise above all constraints by nurturing critical & logical thinking, developing scientific temperament, research acumen and leadership qualities.

Aims and Objectives of 6th J&K WSC

JKWSC is an attempt to facilitate women’s scientific endeavor. J&K Science Technology & Innovation Council, Department of Science and Technology, J&K plays a crucial role in promoting, recognizing and rewarding excellence in Science, Technology & Mathematics. Through this avenue, more young female minds can be inspired to be a part of scientific community, to engage themselves in active research in science. The women science congress is a step towards capacity building of women, to experiment their ideas, to share their research and nurture young minds for innovative research. The main objectives of JKWSC are:
  • To motivate women scientists and enhance their participation in science and create a sustained platform to demonstrate women’s contribution in science in India.
  • To aware women participants about their fundamental rights and transform them to preferred workers.
  • To focus on real ground level problems hindering the progress of Indian women in science and development process.
  • To empower the women folk through Science & Technology mentoring.
  • To provide an ideal forum & opportunity to Women Scientists & researchers of the state and other parts of India to showcase their contribution and join with experts &academic leaders.
  • To empower females to assume leadership positions, enhance professionalism while enabling them to face challenges of life effectively.
  • To provide an open forum to the women/students to interact with the leading Women Scientists and academician from different parts of the country & state to improve the quality of scientific research at college level.

The main theme of JKWSC is “Research & Women in Science, Technology & Mathematics – Representation, Challenges & Opportunities”

The abstracts are invited for the following Subthemes:

  1. Penetration of Women in Science, Technology & Mathematics
  2. New approach to involve/absorb and retain women in Science, Technology & Mathematics
  3. Women in Research: An Overview of the Challenges
  4. Women empowerment through Science, Technology & Mathematics
  5. Women & Work: Health, Family responsibility, Safety & Job Satisfaction/Financial independence/Security
  6. Transform into the tide of Women in Research, Science, Technology and Mathematics

The 6th JKWSC will cover Plenary talks, Invitee talks, Sectional presentations (oral/poster), on various themes. Technical presentations will cover the following broad subject areas and research papers are invited for presentation in these subject areas:

  • Applied Sciences
  • Life Sciences /Health Sciences
  • Material Sciences
  • Mathematical Sciences
  • Physical Sciences & other related science subjects.

Participants for the 6th J&K Women Science Congress include Scientists, Researchers, Technologists, Educationists, Environmentalists, Doctors, Entrepreneurs and Students.

Student’s Corner: Handouts with Scientific Skills is a specially designed session for the interaction of students of different colleges with eminent scientists and academicians scheduled during the Science Congress. This would provide them a window to the opportunities, scope and path in pursuing their research interests.

Symposium will be held on the topic “Why So Few Women in Science, Technology & Mathematics” to encourage students to communicate & share innovative concepts.
