Rashtriya Uchhtar Siksha Abhiyan (RUSA) is a Centrally sponsored Scheme initiated by MHRD New Delhi to improve quality standards in India by creating new institutes through upgradation of existing colleges and conversion of colleges into Cluster. Under this programme 17 RUSA programmes in various states of the country were digitally launched by Hon’ble Minister MHRD, Sh. Parkash Javadkar today on 17.04.2017 in New Delhi at the India Habitat Centre. In a step ahead Cluster University of Jammu and Cluster University of Srinagar were also launched via video conferencing in the Auditorium of Govt. P.G.College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu. On this occasion Jenab Sayed Mohd. Altaf Bukhari, Hon’ble Minister for Education, Ms. Priya Sethi, Hon’ble Minister of State for Education, Technical Education, Culture, Tourism, Horticulture, Floriculture and Parks, Prof. (Dr.) Anju Bhasin, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Cluster University Jammu, Dr. Asgar Hassan Samoon (IAS), Commissioner/Secretary to Govt., Higher Education Department, Dr. Jatinder Khajuria, Registrar Cluster University Jammu, Mr. Tariq Ahmed Zargar, Director RUSA, Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal, Govt. P.G.College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu, Principals of various Degree Colleges, diginatories and students were present. It is important to mention that J&K State is the first state to launch these two Cluster Universities in the country. Under this University five colleges including GGM Science College, Jammu as lead college and four other colleges Govt. P.G.College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu, Govt. MAM College, Jammu, Govt. SPMR College of Commerce, Jammu and Govt. College of Education, Jammu come under its perview. Whereas in Cluster University Srinagar five colleges including Amar Singh College as lead College, SP College Srinagar, Govt. College for Women, MA Road, Institute of Advance studies in Education and GDC Bemina will come under Cluster University.

An Interactive session with Dr. Anju Bhasin, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Cluster University, Jammu was held in the college auditorium to discuss the modules regarding the functioning of constituted cluster university in the presence of Dr. Jatinder Khajuria, Registar Cluster University and Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal, Govt. College for Women Gandhi Nagar Jammu along with staff members in the college auditorium. Dr. Surinder Sharma, Convenor, IQAC made a powerpoint presentation on the various activities undertaken by the Institution during the last three sessions. He also highlighted the academic achievements of the institution. In the presentation excellence in co-curricular activities were also taken into account. After the presentation Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of the Cluster University made certain suggestions for the more efficient functioning in the current academic session i.e 2017-18. She laid stress upon the optimal use of infrastructure, rationale fulfilment of the seats under cluster university for enhancing the quality standards of the college. It ended with vote of thanks by Dr. Revika Arora. Prof. Bhasin took the round of the various departments of the college and paid visit to Laboratories, Library, Staff Room and also interacted with the students and the staff.

Department of Philosophy of Govt. P.G. College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu organized a lecture on the topic “Shankara and Ramanuja on Vedanta”. The lecture was organized under the auspices of the Indian Council of Philosophical Research as the final lecture in a four-lecture series. Dr. Kiran Bakshi, the Principal of the college and a student of philosophy herself, was the Resource Person on this occasion. In her lecture, she underlined the development of the Vedanta school of Indian philosophy and its subsequent flowering into the two schools of Advaita and Vishishtadvaita. Whereas Advaita Vedanta holds a monistic view of reality and regards knowledge as the chief means to liberation, Vishishtadvaita Vedanta believes in qualified monism and holds that devotion and surrender to God is the path to escape the cycle of birth and death. Dr. Kiran Bakshi ably emphasized the significance of these concepts and presented simple examples from everyday life to facilitate understanding among the students. The students were attentive throughout the lecture and had a fruitful interaction with the speaker, making the lecture a success. Vote of thanks was extended by Prof. Varun Sharma.

The second day of the two-day workshop on “Scientific Skill Development among Women”, being organized by Govt. P.G.College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu in collaboration with J&K Science, Technology and Innovation Council, Department of Science & Technology, J&K began today on 18th of March, 2017 in the College Auditorium. The proceedings started with the technical session wherein, Dr. Maya Saran, Department of Mathematics, Ashoka University, Haryana, presented a paper on the subject, ‘What is Mathematics, Really’. Dr. Maya discussed at length on the history of Mathematics which was made interesting by citing examples and anecdotes. Dr. Deepika Slathia, Department of Environmental Science, University of Jammu deliberated on ‘Waste Management’ followed by an interactive session wherein Dr. Maya Saran from Ashoka University, Haryana and Dr. Veenu Koul, Dr. Deepika Slathia, Prof. Namrata Sharma and Prof. Seema Langer from University of Jammu interacted with the students and satisfied their queries by updating their knowledge regarding ban on polythene bags, waste management and everyday mathematics.

Speaking in the valedictory session of the workshop, the Chief Guest Jenab Asgar Hassan Samoon (IAS), Commissioner Secretary, Higher Education Department, lauded the efforts of the Principal, Dr. Kiran Bakshi for organizing the workshop as such workshops play an important role in enhancing the understanding of the students about the latest developments in various fields. He appreciated the resource persons who dissipated their their valuable knowledge among the students. He further said that girl students should hone their skills in consonance with the changing times so as to be equally important in performing their roles in the society. Dr. Kiran Bakshi in her speech said that women had always been instrumental in nation building since time immemorial. Now in these challenging times, woman has to restrengthen herself and set an example for others to use skills and hidden potentials for earning their livelihood with dignity and honour. Prof. Sarla Kohli, Former Principal was present on the occasion as Guest of Honour.

Dr. Anupama Gupta, Organizing Secretary read out the report of the workshop giving details of the proceedings of the programme. The programme concluded with observations by the participants regarding the various aspects of workshop and made recommendations for their successful implementation. Resource Persons, faculty members and students from across various institutions of Jammu were present in the function. Certificates were also distributed among the participants on the occasion.

A two days workshop on “Scientific Skill Development among Women”, sponsored by J&K Science, Technology and Innovation Council, Department of Science & Technology, J&K was inaugurated at Govt. P.G.College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu on 17th of March 2017. Madam Priya Sethi, Hon’ble Minister of State for Education, Technical Education, Culture, Tourism, Horticulture, Floriculture and Parks, J&K Government was the Chief Guest on the occasion. Addressing the gathering, the Hon’ble Minister called upon women in general and young girl students, in particular to be a part of skill India mission and to imbibe and acquire scientific skills in the course of their studies so as to be able to avail various employment opportunities in the ever-growing scientific field. Principal, Dr. Kiran Bakshi, while extending a warm welcome to the distinguished gathering said that women have the potential to excel in science and that the workshop would be a great learning opportunity for the young girl students under the able guidance of their mentors. Dr. Anupama Gupta, Organizing Secretary of the workshop informed the audience that the aim and objective of the workshop was to create awareness among students and to enhance their participation in science. The key note address was delivered by Prof. Geeta Sumbali, Dean Life Sciences, University of Jammu, wherein she dwelt at length upon the Science, Technology and Innovation Policy 2013 which emphasized that its benefits should be meant for inclusive growth of the population particularly of rural women. She strongly advocated that low cost mushroom cultivation which has been a male dominated occupation so far can easily be cultivated by women as well for a sustainable livelihood. Prof. Geeta Sumbali acquainted the young students with the process of Mushroom cultivation through a power-point presentation. Ms. Shruti Khanna, Research Officer, DST Jammu besides Resource persons, faculty and students from various institutions of Jammu attended the workshop. In the technical session on the inaugural day presentations on Flower, Agriculture and Employment and Organic Farming were made by resource persons who included Prof. Namrata Sharma, Dept. of Botany, University of Jammu and Dr. Veenu Kaul, Department of Botany, University of Jammu.

The 43rd Inter-collegiate Annual Athletic Meet (M&W) 2016-17 was organised by the Directorate of Sports and Physical Education University of Jammu. In this tournament college Athletic Team of Govt. P.G. College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu participated and got 5 Gold, 2 Silver and 3 Bronze medals and also clinched overall Championship in Women Section. Ms. Narmita Katoch was adjudged as best athlete of the tournament. The Principal of the college Dr. Kiran Bakshi congrulated the student’s for their best performances in the tournament.

An interaction through the Edusat facility was held from the Edusat Hub of the Govt. P.G.College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu with SIT of IASE Srinagar and Govt. College for Women, M.A Road Srinagar wherein the Commissioner Secretary to Govt., Higher Education Department, Dr. Asgar Hassan Samoon (IAS) interacted with the students and the faculty of Govt. P.G.College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu through their SIT. The Edusat which had been non-functional since 2012 was revived through the intervention and initiative of Commissioner Secretary to Govt., Higher Education Department, J&K Government and the technical support of ISRO. The Commissioner Secretary while interacting with the students and the faculty stressed that this medium should be effectively utilized for enriching the educational environment of the state. The students and the faculty expressed their gratitude to the Higher Education Department for providing them an opportunity for sharing their knowledge and getting access to quality education.

NSS Unit of Govt. P.G.College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu organized an awareness lecture on Breast Cancer. Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College was the chief guest whereas Dr. Kanchan Kaur, Associate Professor Medanta Breast Services was the Resource Person. Dr. Kaur made a presentation on Breast Cancer and its symptoms and prevention in which she talked about identification of the visible and non-visible symptoms which can cause this deadly disease. Dr. Kaur urged all the students to immediately consult a Doctor in case they ever observe any lump, discoloration of the skin or discharge for its prevention and treatment. She also advised to go for a self check atleast once in a month. She told them about the different medicines that are available in Govt. Hospitals. Dr. Kiran Bakshi appreciated the motivational and informative lecture regarding identification of malignancy which can save precious lives. She also urged the students to disseminate the information regarding its symptoms and prevention to detect and curb this problem at a very early stage. The programme was coordinated by NSS volunteers. Prof. Neelam Thapa presented a formal vote of thanks. Prof. Sudhanshu Sharma and Prof. Mala Bhasin were also present on the occasion.

A District Speedball Championship was organized by J&K Sports Speed Ball Association which was held in the University of Jammu in collaboration with Director Sports and Physical Education, University of Jammu on 21st & 22nd February, 2017. In this tournament 40 students of Govt. P.G.College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu participated out of which 16 students got 08 Gold & 08 Silver Medals. The Principal of the College, Dr. Kiran Bakshi and Mrs. Pooja Malhotra, Founder Patron congratulated the students for their active participation in the tournament and distributed medals and certificates to the winner students. Among other Mr. Sudesh Kumar Bhagat, Physical Director of this College. Department of English and Literary committee of Govt. P.G College for Women Gandhi Nagar organized a Symposium on “Truth and Non Violence”. On this occasion Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College was the chief guest. Dr Romika Sudan welcomed the guest and expressed views on the needs and importance of inculcation of Non-violence in our society. Prof. Aekta Gupta, HOD English and Convenor Literary Committee urged students to follow the paths of simplicity, truth and non violence for world peace and harmony. A large no. of students expressed their views. In their deliberations they stressed upon the need of following basic principles of life which distinguishes them from animals. Human beings are known for humbleness, honesty, truthfulness and the inculcation of highest virtues like truth and non-violence makes them the most dignified beings on the earth. Slack of these values threaten their very existence. Our Hon’ble Chief Guest Dr. Kiran Bakshi while addressing the students taught them the basic values and importance of truth and non-violence in our day to day life as well, and urged them to follow stringently. The adjucators for the event were Prof. Diskit Angmo and Prof. Archana Bakshi. Ms. Deepakshi, Ms. Pyunika and Ms. Nagina Choudhary of B.A 2nd Semester got 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes respectively. Department of Philosophy of Govt. P.G.College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu organized a guest lecture on the topic “Origin and Development of Analytic Philosophy”. On this occasion Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College was the Chief Guest whereas Dr. Anil Kumar Tiwari, Department of Philosophy, SMVDU Katra was the Resource Person. Prof. Varun Sharma welcomed the guest and highlighted the role of analytic philosophy in propagating the study and analysis of language. Hon’ble Resource Person made a presentation in which he discussed the origin and development of analytic philosophy and its role in analyzing language which is central to the human expression. Tracing its origin from Frege and Moore, Dr. Tiwari explained the work of philosophers like Russell and Wittgenstein which contributed significantly to its development. Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College summed up the lecture by contributing her valuable insights on the topic. The lecture was well attended by the students of Philosophy and vote of thanks was extended by Prof. Manvinder Singh.

During camping cadets excelled in various activities like Basket Ball, Volley Ball, Tug of War, Fire Extinguishing Competition etc. Cadet Skalzang Dolma, Cadet Shazia Kouser, Cadet Asha Sen, Cadet Shikha, Cadet Anjali, Cadet Akriti, Cadet Radhika, Cadet Jeevan Jyoti, Cadet Babita, Cadet Neetu won Gold and Silver medals in Basket Ball, Volley Ball, Tug of War and Painting Competition respectively. Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College congratulated students for their success and wished them good luck for their future endevours. Lt. It was organized by All India Council for Technical Education to provide special scholarship to the students of J&K under scheme of Ministry of Human Resource Development. The purpose of organizing this workshop was to made wide publicity of the scheme throughout the state as envisaged by Dr. Dileep Malkhede, Advisor, AICTE and to provide ample opportunity to the students of J&K. On this occasion Jenab Naeem Akhter, Hon’ble Minister for Education, J&K Government was the Chief Guest. Dr. Asgar Hassan Samoon (IAS), Commissioner Secretary to Govt., Higher Education Department welcomed all the guests and explained to the audience the main objective of the scholarship scheme which aimed at building capacities of the youths, empowering them to compete in the normal course and boosting employment potential of students of J&K. Prof. A.P.Mittal, Member Secretary AICTE made an opening address and Ms. Madhuri Sahasrabudhe made a power-point presentation on the importance of interaction in developing mutual trust and bonding and shared her personal experiences as a first lady of the Head of Institution. He laid emphasis that all the students having annual income of Rs.6.00 Lakh per annum should avail this scheme. Career Counselling Cell of Govt. P.G.College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu conducted two days mega recruitment drive UDAAN under National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC). It was conducted by NSDC for J&K State only. Its purpose is to train and develop the skill and provide an employment opportunity to the J&K youth. Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College was the Chief Guest, Dr. Anjali Bhat, Convenor presented welcomed all and highlighted the contributions made by Career Counseling Cell in helping the students in job placements. Mr. Ajay Pal Singh, Mobilization Officer from NSDC interacted with the students and advised them to be focused and dedicated in their pursuit for job. Around 14 companies have sent their representatives for the selections of the students who have either completed their graduation in any professional course or pursuing their final year course. Outside students also participated in this grand recruitment drive.

The modern philosophy started with doubt and scientific ideologies. Hence the philosophy started with wonder, grew with faith and culminated with scientific temper.In understanding the world in a very comprehensive manner, a study of Philosophy is of paramount importance. Prof. Meeru Abrol, HOD Mathematics and HOD Philosophy in her address welcome the chief guest, Dr. Kiran Bakshi, the resource person Dr Varun Tripathi, HOD, Philosophy and Dr. Anil Tiwari, Asstt Prof. SMVDU, staff and students and highlighted the importance and relevance of Philosophy in today’s world. Prof. Dr. Kiran Bakshi the chief guest on the occasion, stressed upon the fact that ethically practical should be made the way of life which is instrumental in bringing a positive change in attitude and conduct. On this occasion, Dr. Varun Tripathi HOD Philosophy, SMVDU and Dr Anil Tiwari, Assistant Prof., SMVDU were the resource persons who focussed on the basic concepts of logic and on the refutation of Idealism according to G.E Moore’s . She bagged gold medal in cultural event besides she got third position in group song and fifth position in ship modeling out of seventeen directorates. Cultural Committee of Govt. P.G.College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu in collaboration with Indian Council for Cultural Relation (ICCR), Ministry of External Affairs, Govt. of India organized “Young Trang – 3” in the College Auditorium. The main aim of the event was to identify the exceptional talent at the College level and giving them an international platform for cultural exchange. On this occasion Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College was the Chief Guest where Mr. Balwant Thakur, Regional Director ICCR Jammu presided over the function. Prof. Aekta Gupta, Convenor Cultural committee welcomed the guests and spoke about the objectives of ICCR playing a great role in facilitating the cultural exchange between the nations and providing young budding artists an opportunity to showcase their talents. Mr. Balwant Thakur, Regional Director ICCR Jammu while addressing students told them that ICCR is promoting young students to represent India and her wide culture to the world and vice versa. It is a third programme in the series to select talented students who are further honed for International performances. It gives impetus to the students who did not have access and money to promote themselves but by being the part of ICCR their talent is further strengthened. Dr. Kiran Bakshi also urged the students to perform well in the preliminary selection round and taken an advantage of “Young Trang – 3” programme which is at their door step to identify and recognize their talent. Students made wonderful performances representing local dances, drama and folk songs. Dr. Romika Sudan presented formal vote of thanks.

 

Two days Red Cross Mela Concludes at GCW Gandhi Nagar

Jammu, Jan 29, 2017: Two days Red Cross Mela organized by Red Cross Unit of Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu, concluded here today. The two-day Mela that was inaugurated by Minister of Education, Jenab Naeem Akhter, was formally concluded by Principal of the College, Dr Kiran Bakshi. During the Mela a variety of cultural shows, fun rides, musical programmes and different stalls of games, eatables, cosmetics, garments, crockery etc. were displayed by students of college, different government departments, business houses and industry that attracted thousands of people from all walks of life. Dr Bakshi, said that the main objective of organizing the Mela at college was to hone organizational and management skills among students and youth, and inculcate the spirit of volunteerism and charity at par with ideals of noble mission of Red Cross among them. She appreciated the very active participation of students in particular and every single person/organization in general who played role in making this event a grand success. She thanked various Government Departments those who displayed their products and services during the two days mela which include Department of Horticulture, Floriculture, Handloom, Handicraft, Agriculture (Mushroom Cultivation) and Tourism Development Corporation. She also thanked Department of Ecology, Environment and Remote Sensing, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Civil Defense, College of Education, Indian Red Cross Society, and Govt. Medical College (Blood Transfusion Department) for their participation. We are overwhelmed by extended cooperation of J&K Police in maintaining law and order as well as Fire Brigade services, Jammu Municipal Corporation, and Power Development Department for smooth and successful accomplishment of this mega event, she added. The College Principal also appreciated Ricky bands for their selfless musical contribution to the mela. Red Cross Unit of Govt. P.G.College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu organized Two Days Red Cross Mela on the theme of Organizational & Managerial Skill in the College premises on 28th & 29th January, 2017. In the inaugural ceremony Jenab Naeem Akhter, Hon’ble Minister for Education was the Chief Guest, Jenab Asgar Hassan Samoon (IAS) was the Guest of Honour whereas Mr. R.C.Puri, Honorary Secretary, Red Cross Society Jammu was the Special Guest. The programme began by lighting the traditional lamp by the Chief Guest and other dignitaries followed by welcome address by Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College. In her address Dr. Bakshi stated that the aim of organizing this Mela was to develop and promote different kinds of skills in the students to lead a good and successful life in future. All the stalls were centered around honing of the skills of the students to inculcate managerial, organizational and entrepreneur skills. She thanked representatives of different business units, students of different educational institutions, floriculture department, automobile industries, and sponsors of various units who had voluntarily come forward for the exhibition of different stalls with great enthusiasm and spirit. The emphasis this year was on creating the awareness on stalls like LPG Safety, Role of Civil Defence, SDRF to the general public. Jenab Naeem Akhter, Hon’ble Minister for Education appreciated the visionary step of the College to inculcate great social values into the students by organizing an event like this which enjoins them to their culture. The stalls exhibited were meticulously planned to create awareness regarding environment conservations, civil defence, heritage and culture. In the beginning balloons and pigeons were released as a mark of charity, goodwill and philanthropy symbolizing freedom, happiness and hope. Besides other Sh. Raman Joshi, Cultural Officer Information Department, Executive members of Red Cross Society, Civil Members of the Society were present. The diginatories took the glance of the mela, visited food courts, mushroom development centre stall, localized cusines prepared by students and stalls by other business and industrial units of the state.

 

DEMOCRACY AND ELECTION PROCESS IN INDIA HELD AT GOVT. P.G COLLEGE FOR WOMEN, GANDHI NAGAR JAMMU

Internal Quality Assurance Cell of Govt. P.G.College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu observed National voters Day programme by holding a quiz competition on “Democracy and Election System in India”. On this occasion Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College was the Chief Guest. Dr. Surinder Sharma, Convenor IQAC and Coordinator of the Quiz welcomed the guests and urged the prospective voters to know their rights and cast their votes judiciously in strengthening the democractic process. In the final round 04 teams participated and were quizzed through 05 rounds viz. Multiple Choice, One Word, True False, Abbreviation Round and Visual Round. Ms.Kaneez Fatima and Ms.Mehrum Nisa of Govt. P.G.College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu comprising of winning team whereas 2nd and 3rd prizes were clinched by Govt. SPMR College of Comerce and Govt. MAM College, Jammu, while team of GDC Paloura was given consolation prize. Dr. Kiran Bakshi while congratulating the students for winning competition also advised them to become a prodigious voters and not to let the democracy die by favouratism, castism, regionalism and religionism. Prof. Shivani Manchanda was the quiz master whereas Prof. Shrotika Rajput presented formal vote of thanks. All the members of the organizing committee and students were present on the occassion.

In the competition Cadet Skalazang Dolma was awarded second prize and Cadet Bharti Thakur bagged the third prize. Prof. Poonam ANO escorted the students. Prof. Aekta Gupta, Dean Students Welfare welcomed the Chief Guest and highlighted the motive of celebrating this day to be marked as a symbol of women related activities. A skit was performed on the stage portraying the hapless condition of girl child where she bears the grunt of all kind of social pressure which reduces her status to mere a physical object. Ms. Shriya Baru and Ms. Jhilmil Mengi also shared their views and advocated that women empowerment can only help them survive. Revered Chief Guest Dr. Kiran Bakshi was highly moved by the skit presented by the students and the speeches made by the girl spakers. She stated that our institution is working hard to produce energetic and strong women so that they bcome significant contributors in bringing social change and change of the mindset of the people. Govt. P.G.College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu has initiated to start a three year Foundation Course in Civil Services to prepare students for Civil Services and other competitive examinations. Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College on the directions of Hon’ble Minister for Education, J&K Government formed a committee to guide and motivate students for All India Competitive Examinations. She urged students to avail of this opportunity that has been made available for them to sharpen their acumen and reasoning to crack competitive examinations. A screening test was conducted today to test General aptitude, Reasoning and Mental ability. Out of 280 students 228 appeared and out of them 100 students will be shortlisted. All the students pursuing Bachelor Degree Course were eligible for the entrance test. The classes of the shortlisted students will be conducted thrice a week from 3:00 to 5:00 P.M. Dr. Surinder Kumar, Convenor IQAC and Dr. Sanjay Kotwal, Convenor FCCC overall supervised the smooth conduct of the examination.

NSS Unit, Cultural Committee and Dean Students Welfare collectively celebrated Lohri Festival in the College premises. Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College was the Chief Guest. A large number of students gathered for this celebration. Dr. Kiran Bakshi lit the traditional bonfire – to mark the end of winter and welcome of seasonal change. While addressing the students she highlighted the importance of this festival which is a harbinger of season change brotherhood and burning of all evils in the bonfire. Students made special chhajjas and danced on the drum beats. They sang traditional songs. Rich tributes were also paid to Swami Vivekananda on his birth anniversary. It was also celebrated as the National Youth Day. All the faculty members joined in festive celebration. Besides them Dr. Satinder Singh, Principal, Govt. College for Women, Kathua and Dr. Kamal Kapoor, Head, P.G.Department of Chemistry, University of Jammu were also present.

History has been created by the students of Govt. P.G. College for women who represented University of Jammu in 32nd North Zone Inter University North Zone Youth Festival held at CSJM University Kanpur, UP w.e.f. 2-6 Jan, 2017. The team comprising of Richa Sharma, Pallavi Kunwer, Gauri Thakur, Shruti Sharma, Simran Jaral and Neerja Bharti got Ist prize in Skit Competition among 35 universities from north India. Now, they will represent University of Jammu in Nationals to be held wef 10-14 Feb, 2017 at Shivaji University, Kolhapur (Maharashtra). The skit titled “kuch to socho” was based on the theme “”how students prepare skit for competing at zonal level”. The high energy level, acting skills and confidence of the students was highly appreciated by the judges and audience at the festival. Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal and other members of cultural committee of the college congratulated the students on their success.

NSS and NCC units along with VISAKA Committee in collaboration with I-Tech Institute of I.T and Management, CSC, E-Governance, Ministry of I.T, Govt. of India organized a Guest Lecture on General Awareness of Cash Less Transactions. On this occasion Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College was the Chief Guest whereas Mohd. Shahraz Khan, Director of I-Tech was the resource person. In his presentation he laid stress upon using cashless payments through E-transactions, Debit and Credit Card payments, PayTM and cheques. He also stated that the cashless transaction reduces the risk o getting cheated, theft and insecurity. With secure passwords the money get transferred from one account to other with transparency and accuracy. He told students to popularize this mode of payment to yours nears and dears and request them to install SBI wallets, JK Bank apps, BHIM etc. The rally was also flagged off by the Principal of the college where the students were holding the placards, slogans and posters to educate the students of the college about cashless transactions. On 10th of January Poster Making and Slogan writing competition was also held in the college on the above mentioned theme and the judgement was declared today. In poster making competition Ms. Bharti Thakur of 2nd Semester got 1st , Cadet Mehak got 2nd , Neetu Dogra got third and Samanpreet got 4th position whereas th Slogan Writing Competition Ms. Shikha Gautam, Ms. Skalzang Dolma, Ms. Monika and Ms. Reeta Bhardwaj got 1st, 2nd 3rd and 4th position respectively. A mela was also organized to popularize and generate awareness among the students about cashless transactions.

The aim of the event was to spread awareness among students to be a contributor in Cashless Transactions. NCC cadets, NSS volunteers and students of the College participated in this competition. She urged students to become ambassadors of the usefulness of Cashless payment through Paytm, SBI Wallet, Credit and Debit Cards for all your transactions in order to curb corruption, black money and money hoarding. She also added that all the developed economies in the world are Cashless and our country is also moving in the same directions to be a developed, prosperous and strong nation. PG College for Women Gandhi Nagar Jammu organized awareness cum discussion session

in the college auditorium for the promotion and implementation of cashless economy and to train teaching, non teaching, student volunteers sand vendors of the college. The programme was organized by VISAKA committee in collaboration with IQAC. On this occasion Mr. AnuJ Mahajan Senior Manager HDFC deliberated upon various modes of collection and digital payment of product and services, Prof. Aekta Gupta convenor, VISAKA briefed the audience about the campaign VISAKA launched by MHRD, Prof. Shivani Manchanda presented vote of thanks.

 

Celebration of Constitution Day

On the direction of Ministry of HRD, Govt. of India, the department of Political Science, Govt. P.G.College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu under the guidance of the Principal, Dr. Kiran Bakshi, organized various activities to mark the celebration of Constitution Day. Week long celebrations like debate competition based on the Indian Constitutional values wherein 10 students participated and around 100 students attended the programme, reading and specifying the basics of the preamble to the constitution, a talk on salient features of the constitution was also held. A mock parliament was also conducted to enable the students to understand the proceedings of the parliament especially Lok Sabha. The programme concluded with the pledge taken by the students along with faculty members to respect their constitution and to become responsible and law abiding citizens.

 

AIDS Awareness Rally

Red Ribbon Club of Govt. P.G.College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu organized an AIDS Awareness Rally. On this occasion Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College implored students to disseminate the information to all and sundry about this dreadful disease. She also said that today is taken as a reminder in continuation to World AIDS Day Awareness Programme and fighting bravely against it can be remedy and requested students to extend their helping hands to all those who are in need. Dr. Manisha Kohli, Convenor Red Ribbon Club stressed upon the need of awareness of AIDS free society. On this occasion members of Red Ribbon Club Prof. Ashwani Khajuria, Prof. Malti Rajput, Prof. Kiran Bala & Dr. Shiv Mangal Singh were also present.

Red Ribbon Club of Govt. P.G College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu concluded the week long celebration of AIDS Awareness Programme. On this occasion Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College was the Chief Guest. In a week long celebration poster making competition was held in which 34 students made posters on the transmission and spread of this disease. Prof. Suchitra Saproo, HOD Chemistry, Dr. Naveen Anand and Dr. Indu Khajuria were the adjucators for this event. Ms. Pragati, Ms. Mamta Kumari and Ms. Shruti Arora of B.A Part III secured first, second and third position respectively. Speaking on the occasion Dr. Kiran Bakshi advised students to help society to curb it and spread awareness to save the souls who have become the victims of this disease for one or the other reasons. Dr. Manisha Kohli, Convenor Red Ribbon Club stated that the awareness generated in the week long AIDS awareness programme will change the mind set of the people and they will be given an equal opportunity to live amicably and peacefully in a society. On this occasion Dr. Tabasum Jabeen, Deputy Director (BS), Ms. Deepika B.Thakur, Deputy Director (IEC) and Mr. Rajesh Sharma, Asstt. Director (Youth Affairs) from, J&K State AIDS Control Soceity were present. They also appreciated the initiatives taken by the Institution to educate future builders about mode and transmission of this disease which will help in eradicating it from the society as well as in accommodating victims in the mainstream of society. Final Round of 7th Annual Inter-state (Northern Zone) Declamation Contest

Final Round of 7th Annual Inter-state (Northern Zone) Declamation Contest for the Silver Rolling Trophy instituted by Hon’ble Governor of J&K Sh. N.N.Vohra on the topic “Is practice of liberal values the only way to end the politics of hate and harm?” was organized by the Department of Higher Education, Govt. of J&K at Govt. P.G. College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu on 25th November, 2016. The inaugural session commenced with lighting of the traditional lamp followed by Saraswti Vandana. Sh. Kavinder Gupta, Hon’ble Speaker, State Legislative Assembly, J&K Govt. was the Chief Guest who declared the contest open, Dr. Asgar Hassan Samoon (IAS), Commissioner Secretary to Govt., Higher Education Department was the Guest of Honour whereas Dr. Renu Goswami, Director Colleges was the Presiding Officer. The valedictory session was graced by the presence of Sh. N.N.Vohra, Hon’ble Governor of J&K as the Chief Guest and Smt. Usha Vohra, First Lady of the state – as the Guest of Honour, and Ms. Priya Sethi, Hon’ble Minister of State for Education, Technical Education, Culture, Tourism, Horticulture, Floriculture and Parks, J&K Government was the Presiding Officer. Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College welcomed the chief guest, guest of honour, presiding officer, jury members, observers, dignitaries, former and present principals of the various Degree Colleges and guests. In her welcome address Dr. Kiran Bakshi referred this contest as a visionary step of Hon’ble Governor of J&K Sh. N.N.Vohra for storming the intelligencia of the young minds to come up with new solutions, suggestions and proposal for the formulation of new policies which will help the nation to get rid of the malice of hate and harm for the sake of benefiting their own groups on the basis of caste, culture, region and religion. She also added that the young mind is brimming with new ideas so the responsibility has been put upon the shoulders of future generation to construct and run the nation in their own way. She expressed her happiness over the successful involvement of Ladakh Region in this contest for the consecutive third time. A large number of students from the Northern States of India including Delhi, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Uttranchal, Himachal Pradesh, Chandigarh (UT) and J&K had participated. Dr. Asgar Hassan Samoon (IAS), Commissioner Secretary to Govt., Higher Education Department applauded the participants for their varied and diverse views. He advocated that good education and good governance can bring sustainable peace in a society and the politics of hate and harm can end only if right kind of education is provided to the students at the initial stage. Hon’ble Governor of J&K in his observation expressed his extreme happiness that the view expressed by the students will pave a new way for eliminating the politics of hate and harm and only education, dialogue and discussion and draw roadmap for creation of harmonious society to implement the liberal values. He thanked all the participants for their creative entelechy which had made this contest perspicacious for healthy exchange of ideas and thereby enriching one another. The Research Reporter which is the compilation of the Research Papers of the teaching faculty is also released. Prof. Arti Bakshi, Head of the Department, Department of Psychology,University of Jammu, Prof. Varun Tripathi, Department of Philosophy, S.M.V.D.U, Katra, Prof. Monika Sethi, Department of English, University of Jammu, Prof. V.K.Anand, Former HOD Botany & Dean Life Sciences, University of Jammu were the adjucators to evaluate the performance of the participants whereas the observers for the event were Prof. Z.A.Chat, Chairman, J&K Board of School Education, Prof. Mohd Aslam Baba, Principal, Amar Singh College, Srinagar and Sh. Dhananter Singh, Deputy Secretary, Hon’ble Governor’s Secretariat, J&K State. The observers and the jury members also shared their thoughts on the occasion. The prizes were given away by the Hon’ble Governor to the winners. The first prize was clinched by Ms. Seerat Baji of Govt. P.G.College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu and Ms. Parul Oberoi of GCW, Udhampur constituting the winning team, the runner up team including Ms. Niharika from Lovely Professional University Jallandhar and Mr. Zahid Farooq of GDC, Budhal. The cash prizes of Rs.11000/-, Rs.7500/- and Rs.5000/- were given to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd winners of the contest. The first cash prize was given to Ms. Seerat Baji of Govt. P.G. College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu second was given to . Niharika from Lovely Professional University Jallandhar and the third was given to Ms. Parul Oberoi of GCW, Udhampur. Besides this the three consolation prizes of Rs.2500/- each were given to Mr. Zahid Farooq of GDC, Budhal, Mr. Piyush from Lovely Professional University Jallandhar and Ms. Tarunika Rajesh from Law College Dehradun. All the participants were given mementoes and certificates of participation. Dr. Ajeet Angral, Nodal Principal, GGM Science College, Jammu thanked all the participants of the Northern States for their inundated response and cooperation and also extended his gratitude to one and all for their benign presence and cooperation. The programme was conducted by the students of the College.

 

Seven days AIDS Awareness Programme

Red Ribbon Club of Govt. P.G College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu inaugurated seven days AIDS Awareness Programme. On this occasion Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College was the Chief Guest. On the first day students made a big Red Ribbon which symbolized saving the suffering humanity from this disease and also by litting candles to grant peace to the traumatized souls. Two minutes silence was observed for World peace and for AIDS free society. Dr. Kiran Bakshi while addressing the students advised them to be the ambassadors and spread knowledge and awareness to save the souls of the human being who have become the victims of this disease from one or the other reasons. The Preliminary Round of 7th Annual Inter-Collegiate (Northern Zone) Declamation Contest on the topic: “Is practice of liberal values the only way to end the politics of hate and harm?” for Silver Rolling Trophy instituted by Hon’ble Governor of J&K, Sh. N.N.Vohra was organized by Department of Higher Education at Govt. College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu. The programme commenced with lighting of the traditional lamp and by invoking the blessings of goddess Saraswati. Dr. Asgar Hassan Samoon (IAS), Commissioner/Secretary to Govt., Higher Education Department, J&K Government whereas Dr. Renu Goswami, Director Colleges, Higher Education Department. Sh. O.P.Bhagat (KAS), Additional Secretary, Governor’s Secretariat, Raj Bhavan, J&K and Prof. Surinder Gupta, Former Dean & Prof. Medicine, SKAUST, R.S.Pura Campus were the Observers for the event. Dr. Anil Kumar Tiwari, Assistant Professor, School of Philosophy & Culture, SMVDU Katra, Dr. J.R.Panda, Former HOD Sociology, University of Jammu and Prof. Rita Munshi, Former Principal, GCW, Gandhi Nagar were the adjucators to evaluate the performance of the participants. Dr. Ajeet Angral Nodal Principal, GGM Science College also graced the occasion. Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College welcomed the Chief Guest, Observers, Jury members, distinguished guests, participants and faculty members and stated that the practice of liberal value has been mistaken and the people used it as a politics of hate and harm by polarizing the religion, region, language and caste. The view and opinions expressed by the participants will suggest a way to amend these follies for holistic living. Dr. Anupama Gupta, Organizing Secretary presented key note address in which she discussed that this kind of contest provides vibrant and vivacious platform for exchange of ideas and emergence of new thoughts. 35 students of different Degree Colleges of Jammu Province participated and mesmerized the audience with their deliberations to reduce discontent of hate and harm in society. Hon’ble Chief Guest applauded the participants for their varied and diverse views. He advocated good education and good governance can bring sustainable peace in a society and the politics of hate and harm can end only if right kind of education is provided to the students at the initial stage. He also presented a power-point presentation on “Peace Education” wherein he discussed aspects of conflicts, rifes and communal divide which is harming the society at alarming rate. The dignitaries also released the Annual Academic Calendar of the College. The five teams will be selected for the final round of Northern Zone Inter-State Declamation Contest which will be held on 25th of November, 2016. The first prize was clinched by Ms. Seerat Bajji of Govt. P.G College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu, 2nd prize was won by Ms. Parul Oberoi of GCW, Udhampur and the 3rd prize went in favour of Ms. Shabina Akhter, GDC Udhampur. Besides this the three consolation prizes were given to the students. Mr. Zahid Farooq, GDC Budhal, Ms. Bisat Tariq, GCOE, Jammu and Mr. Anuj Sharma of GCET, Jammu were given 1st, 2nd and 3rd consolation prizes respectively. Dr. Revika Arora thanked one and all for their benign presence and for the successful conduct of the event.

 

Guest lecture on the bicentennial celebration of Birth Anniversary of Shri Satguru Ram Singh Ji

Govt. P.G College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu organized a guest lecture on the bicentennial celebration of Birth Anniversary of Shri Satguru Ram Singh Ji. On this occasion Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College was the Chief Guest whereas Prof. Poonam facilitated the information on the life and achievements of Shri Satguru Ram Singh Ji. In her power-point presentation she highlighted the contributions made by the saint by exponenting against female foeticide, child marriage and bartering of daughters. She also stated that he also laid emphasis on the education of both the sexes and lived a life as great thinker, a seer, philanthropist, freedom fighter, social reformist harbinger of upliftment of women and down trodden people. Dr. Kiran Bakshi in her address also advocated that his preaching and path of austerity is a beacon of life for all of us and we should all follow his path to live in an evil free society and by vanguarding, women empowerment. Prof. Surjeet Kaur Raina, Head Department of Punjabi coordinated the programme. It was attended by students and staff of the College.

 

Home Science Department organized “Hastkala Diwali Dhamaka” and exhibition cum sale

Home Science Department of Govt. P.G College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu organized “Hastkala Diwali Dhamaka” and exhibition cum sale on the eve of Diwali. On this occasion Dr. Nirmal Gupta, Hon’ble Chairperson State Social Welfare Board, Jammu J&K was the Chief Guest whereas Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College presided over the function. The exhibition was organized under Skill Development Programme, an initative taken by Principal of the College to train the young students for honing the entrepreneur skills. The students had setup special stalls of hand made items like Decorative and Floating Diyas, Candles, Flower Pots, Boutique suits, Rangoli Colours, Touran, Pooja thalis, Decorative Nail Art and other such stalls depicting skill acumen available in the college. Hon’ble Chief Guest appreciated the efforts made by the students and encouraged them to takeup self enterprising future. Dr. Kiran Bakshi also lauded the efforts of the young students in giving new shape to the things through their creativity and made them saleable commodity in a market. Students and staff of the College made big purchases to welcome the goddess laxmi on the auspicious occasion of Diwali.

Cadets of Govt. P.G College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu attended Special National Integration Camp held at Andhra Pradesh w.e.f. 10.10.2016 to 21.10.2016. In this camp there was a representation from all the states and J&K Directorate got overall 2nd rank in all the events. In NIAP and Cultural Activities cadets got bronze medal. Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College boosted the morale of the candidates and Prof. Poonam, ANO also congratulated them and whished them good luck for their future endeavours.

 

GCW Gandhi Nagar organizes Mushroom Cultivation Training

As part of skill development programme, the Department of Botany of Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar in collaboration with Department of Agriculture, J&K Govt, Jammu, organized Mushroom cultivation training here today. A team of experts from Department of Agriculture comprising Vijay Kaw, Mushroom Development Officer, and Mushroom Research Officers Aman Jyoti Sharma and Chander Shekhar gave practical training in Mushroom propagation to the college students. In continuation to the first two phases – making and finishing Mushroom compost, demonstrated in Agriculture Department, the experts today gave practical training of spawning of Mushrooms (Agaricus bisporus) in the college auditorium and Botany Lab. They also showed videos and CDs of growing Mushroom. Principal of College, Dr. Kiran Bakshi who was Chief Guest on the occasion appreciated the efforts of Botany Department for establishing Mushroom cultivation centre last year in college. She also lauded the co-operation of Department of Agriculture in this very pertinent endeavor through which students can generate revenues for their livelihood by making small investments. Earlier, Dr. Suman Bala, Head of Botany Department who co-ordinated the programme, introduced the audience about the Mushrooms, their ecological importance and rich food value, and highlighted how they can play role in reducing poverty and empowering the communities. A group of 40 students initially trained through this programme, which hopefully cover most of students taking Botanical studies in college, she added. Prof. Mala Basin presented the formal vote of thanks. Two days NAAC sponsored National Seminar on “Quality Culture in Higher Education: The Road Ahead” w.e.f. 25th & 26th of October, 2016 culminated at Govt. P.G College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu. In the valedictory session Prof. R.D.Sharma, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu was the Chief Guest whereas Prof. Nalini Kohli, Former Director Colleges, Higher Education Department, J&K Government was the Guest of Honour. Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College and patron of the seminar welcomed the guests and stated that the deliberations made under different sub themes of the seminar will prove greatly beneficial in strengthening the quality concerns in higher education institutions. Dr. Rajinder Sharma, Organizing Secretary read out the detailed report of the seminar nearly 200 delegates participated, 06 technical sessions held in which 120 presentations were made and 04 invited lectures delivered and the chairpersons from different Universities of India participated. Hon’ble Vice Chancellor while addressing the audience stressed upon the need of upholding the standards, upgrading the infrastructure and curriculum to raise the quality of educational institutions. He also added that deliberations definitely propose new resolutions to fill the lacunae of poor quality. Former Director Colleges also shared her views. Dignitaries also released the compile proceedings on “Career in Science for Women – Challenges and Opportunities” organized by the College in collaboration with J&K Science Technology & Innovation Council, Department of Science and Technology, J&K on 1st to 3rd September, 2016. Kavinder Gupta, Hon’ble Speaker J&K Legislative Assembly was the Chief Guest, Prof. Ashok Aima, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Central University of Jammu was the Guest of Honour whereas Padamshree Dr. Mehmood ur Rehman (IAS) Former Vice Chancellor Aligarh Muslim University was the Key Note Speaker. The programme began by lighting of the lamp followed by seeking the blessings of goddess Saraswati. Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College and patron of the seminar welcomed the guests and also implored participants that by their deliberations on the topic, new proposals and ideas for improving quality in Higher Education will be chalked out to make the road map of success ahead. Dr. Rajinder Sharma, Organizing Secretary stated that our stake holders are young students and maintaining a good quality in Higher Education is our major concern. He stressed that only quality generates employability, skill development, communiation skills, moral development and economic independence. Hon’ble Chief Guest appreciated the initiative of the College in organizing a seminar that will hold the policy for further improvement and strengthening of higher education. Prof. Ashok Aima also shared his views that linking of education at all level is important for paving the road ahead. Hon’ble key note speaker Dr. Mehmood Ur Rehman speaking to the audience that the intellectual development and taste is refined only by taking a right kind of education. To motivate the youth for harmony, tolerance and peace it is imperative that Higher Education create an ambience where all these ideologies are imbibed by the students for holistic development of the nation. Abstract book was also released. It was attended by the Principals of the various Degree Colleges of Jammu Province and the large number of delegates in an out of the state participated with great zeal. Seven Naval cadets of Govt. College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu attended All India Nav Sainik Camp at Karwar, Karnataka. Cadets outshined in various events where in they clinched third position in Cultural, 4th position in semaphore and 4th position in ship modeling. Furthermore J&K Directorate scored 9th rank amongst the 17 Directorates. Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College congratulated them and also encouraged them to carry on the sequence of victories. Dr. Revika Arora (ANO), Prof. Poonam Rajput (ANO) and Prof. Malti Rajput (ANO) also appreciated the cadets for bringing glory and pride to the state as well as to institution.

Investiture Ceremony was organized in the College

Continuing the healthy tradition of delegating responsibility to the students in a formal occasion – Investiture Ceremony was organized in the College. On this occasion Dr. Renu Goswami, Director Colleges was the Chief Guest whereas Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College presided over the function. The programme began by formal welcome address by Dean Students Welfare (Arts) Prof. Aekta Gupta. She felicitated the presidium and urged them to perform their duty in a democratic manners for smooth functioning of the College. The outgoing President Ms. Namrata Chib lighted the much coveted torch of responsibilities and position and handed it over to the newly elected President and members of presidium for discharge of duties. Dr. Kiran Bakshi also wished good luck to the presidium, student council, CRs, volunteers, organizers and Dean Students Welfare for holding a big responsibility to act as facilitator in carrying out events of the College. She also encouraged them to work for the betterment with zeal and zest so that College emerges as the forerunner in all the endeavours and ventures. Ms. Shivika Thakur was felicitated as President, Ms. Deepanshi Cahrak as Vice President, Ms. Shriya Baru as General Secretary, Ms. Itika as Volunteeer head, Ms. Maheen Nizami as Joint Secretary, Ms.Ritika as Jr.Teasurer, Ms. Simran Dogra as Sr. Treasurer and Ms. Mehak as Head Girl of the College. A charter of duties and responsibilities of an ideal students was read out to make everybody aware of their respective responsibilities towards institution. All the students, CRs and Vounteers participated in an oath taking ceremony and pledged to maintain the discipline, glory and prestige of the College in the years to come. Prof. Shivani Manchanda coordinated the programme and it was attended by students and staff of the College.

In keeping with the idea of promoting skill education, Govt. P.G College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu celebrated the festival of “Karvachouth” by combining skill with festivities. On the occasion the students of the College displayed their skills by applying henna on the hands of the teachers and enthusiastic students. The talented students impressed everyone by making beautiful designs and patterns of mehandi on their hands. The Principal, Dr. Kiran Bakshi wished the female staff of the college and exhorted the students to always remain eager to learn these skills along with their regular academic work. The event provided a good platform for “Hunar Se Rozgar” as the the students were able to earn hence making them confident and self reliant

GCW Gandhi Nagar is overall Champion at Display Your Talent, 2016-17 at University of Jammu

Overall champion; student of GCW, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu brought laurels to the college by clinching. The overall Championship Trophy in the recently held Display Your Talent, 2016-17 at University of Jammu in which near about 145 private and Govt institution of higher learning participated. Along with bagging, the overall Championship Trophy Prof. Santosh Sharma Memorial Trophy for the overall best performance in theatrical events was also bagged by students and Vijay Verma and Dr. J.R. Sharma Memorial Trophy for the overall best performance in music was also bagged by the college. The overall best student award was bagged by Ms. Richa Sharma. The principal of the college Dr. Kiran Bakshi along with the teacher incharge congratulated the students for their efforts and their glorious performance.

 

Sensitization programme on sanitation

The sensitization programme on the significance/need of cleanliness and sanitation was organized by Students Welfare Committee of Govt. P.G College for Women, Gandhi Nagar as a part of ongoing Swacchta Pakwada. During this period seminars, group discussions, essay writing competitions on the theme of “Cleanliness and Hygiene” in our life and surroundings was organized. On this occasion the students and employees also took pledge to keep their surroundings clean. A nukkad natak was performed by the students of the college to spread awareness on the virtues of sanitation and cleanliness. Banners on the importance of Swacchta were displayed in the entire college for maximum awareness. GCW Gandhi Nagar organizes Potted Plant Competition

Jammu 5 October, 2016: The Department of Botany of Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar organized a potted plant competition here today. Principal of College, Dr. Kiran Bakshi who was the Chief Guest on the occasion inaugurated the plant exhibition. She appreciated the Department of Botany for providing such platform through which students can contribute and adopt plants in the college campus. About 50 students participated in the competition. Darshpreet Kour of B.A. Sem. 3rd won first prize whereas Marvi Sharma of B.Sc Sem. 5th and Shrishti of B.Sc Sem 1st stood 2nd and 3rd respectively. The consolation prizes won by Arshdeep Kour of B.A. Sem 3rd , Palak Jain of B.A. Sem 3rd and Haripriya Sharma of B.Sc Sem. 1st. The competition was judged by Prof. Sangita Nagari from GDC R.S, Pura, Prof. Seema Kotwal from GCW Prade and Dr. Harish Dutt from University of Jammu. Earlier, Prof. Suman Bala Sharma, Head of Botany Department, introduced the participants about objective of organizing this competition. She said the whole idea to organize this event was encourage students to plant more trees while starting from their college campus to overcome deforestation and climate change. Awareness Lecture on Equal Opportunity

The Equal Opportunity Cell of Govt. College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu organized an Awareness Lecture on Rights and Privileges of students belonging to SC/ST/OBC/Minority and other disadvantaged sections of society, today on 5th October, 2016 under the chairpersonship of the Principal of the College, Dr. Kiran Bakshi. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Kiran Bakshi, encouraged the students to avail the benefits and opportunities provided to them for their betterment by the College and also exhorted them to bring any kind of discrimination into the notice of the concerned cell. The resource person Prof. Ramzan Ali, Department of Education in his lecture, sensitized the SC/ST students about their rights and various provisions made available to them by the State and Centre Governments. Student volunteers were also selected from among the different categories of students by the Cell. The following members of Equal Opportunity Cell namely Prof. Diskit Angmo, Prof. Mohinder Pal, Dr. Sanjeet Kour, Prof. Renu Angurana and Prof. Rajni Bhagat were present on the occasion.

Advance Leadership Camp (ALC) was held at NCC Academy Malout (Punjab) in which 17 cadets of the college participated. Cadet Sarita Saini got silver medal in Debate competition, Cadet Ranjeeta Kumari got gold and silver medals for camp senior and representator respectively. All cadets got gold in cultural event. GCW, GANDHI NAGAR CELEBRATES “HINDI PAKHWADA”

Govt. College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu celebrated ‘Hindi Pakhwada’: a fortnight carnival of Hindi literary activities. On the valedictory function Prof. Chanchal Dogra, Former Principal, was the Chief Guest and Principal, GCW, Gandhi Nagar Dr. Kiran Bakshi was the Guest of Honour. The programme began by lighting the traditional lamp of enlightenment. Head, Department of Hindi, Dr. Jugal K.Puri welcomed the guests. A fusion of Hindi literary activities like Kavita Path, Laghu Katha, Essay Writing and Quiz Competition were held to embellish this event in a two week long celebrations. Prof. Dogra in her address inspired a good number of students to participate in these creative activities in Hindi for its fullest growth. She also emphasized that she has a sense of belongingness to this language because it speaks of culture, tradition and oneness, which is purely Indian. Principal of the college Dr. Kiran Bakshi also agreed to Prof. Dogra for calling this language a true mode of self expression. She considered this celebration as a matter of great pride since it will enhance the creative abilities of the students and strengthen their language and communication skills. She congratulated Dr. Puri for the initiation of this two week long programme which will be beneficial for all the Hindi and Non Hindi speaking students. On this occasion ‘Katha Vaachan’ was organized to hallmark the event and it was judged by HOD English, Prof. Aekta Gupta, HOD Mathematics, Prof. Meeru Abrol and HOD Urdu, Prof. Daljeet Verma. The first prize was bagged by Ms. Rohini Raina second prize was given to Ms. Monika Kumari and third prize was won by Ms. Mehak Devi. GCW Gandhi Nagar organizes Interactive Session on UN 17 SDGs

As a part of 12 days UN campaign from Peace to Non-Violence, Red Cross Unit of Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar in collaboration with Gandhi Global Family (GGF) under the aegis of United Nations Centre (UNIC) New Delhi organized an interactive session on United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals here today. Eminent Gandhian Padmashiri S.P. Varma, Vice President Gandhi Global Family- a UNDPI organization partnering with UN for promotion of UN SDGs from 2016 to 2030, who was Chief Guest on the occasion, in his keynote speech detailed the students about the 17 different UN Sustainable Development Goals to transform the world. He emphasized upon the students and youth to know, adopt, practice and promote these goals to make real difference in the lives of the people of world while acting more locally. Varma underlined that only the spirit of one humanity, empathy and peaceful co-existence of all can uproot hatred, intolerance and violence from our world. Since whole world is looking towards the ideology of our father of nation, Mahatma Gandhi, to bring sustainable peace and development on globe, we (Indians) being successors of this apostle of peace, have greater responsibility to keep intact his dream of nation and world, he added. On this occasion, the students also gave suggestions for bringing sustainable peace in our state following the footsteps of Mahatma Gandhi. A quiz on United Nations and world peace was also organized and winners were presented UN Souvenirs. Earlier, Dr. Ashaq Malik, Co-ordinator of Red Cross in College, introduced the audience about , 12 days UN campaign from Peace to Non-Violence that started on 21st September on the eve of world Peace day to October 2nd, the International Day of non-Violence, by Gandhi Global Family, and role of Gandhian organization to bring peace and harmony in the society. In the formal vote of thanks, Prof. Tahira Firdous, appreciated GGF for bringing awareness among youth and students of college in particular and Jammu in general about the United Nations and its SDGs.

NSS Unit of Govt. College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu celebrated NSS Day on 24th September, 2016 in the campus by organizing a motivational lecture on “Career and Counselling” for excellence in life. Dr. Sunil Gupta (IPS), S.S.P Jammu was the Resource Person. Dr. Sudhanshu Sharma, Senior faculty member welcomed the guests and deliberated upon the need of celebrating NSS day. The worthy resource person in his presentation motivated the volunteers to be focused in their life. He also stated that digressions and distractions are the great enemies which waste the human resource and divert them to addiction and other anti-social activities. He urged them to be target oriented for utilizing the human potential which is the great strength of a nation. Prominent among present were Mr. Sazad Salaria (KPS), S.P.South, Mr. Sachin Gupta (KPS), SDPO South, Mr. Bishnesh, SHO Gandhi Nagar and other officers from Police administration. To commemorate this day NSS volunteers presented a cultural bonanza and orchestral presentation added musical jazz to the event. Communication and Language Skills

Language Club of Govt. College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu organized a lecture on the topic “Communication and Language Skills”. Mr. Nitish Arora from All India Radio was the resource person. We deliberated on the various models of communication and the importance of having good language skills which are necessary for a successful career. Prof. Aekta Gupta, Convenor Language Club, Prof. Vandana Khajuria, Convenor Literary Club and large no. of students were present on the occasion. The lectures ended with the healthy interaction of the students with the resource person.

 

Strengthening the spirit of Nationalism

Department of Political Science, Govt. College for Women Gandhi Nagar Jammu organized a Seminar on the topic “Strengthening the spirit of Nationalism”. Dr. Kiran Bakshi Patron and Principal Govt. College for Women Gandhi Nagar Jammu extended her full support in organizing the seminar. On this occasion Dr. Sudhanshu Sharma presided over the programme. Ten students deliberated both on the theoretical and practical aspects of the topic. Students expressed their views on the ways to achieve Nationalism and how to remove obstacles which hindered the growth of National Spirit. Prof. Aekta Gupta, Dean Student Welfare, Dr. S. Perminder Kour, H.O.D, Political Science, Prof. Rashmi Sharma, Prof. Shrotika Rajput and Prof. Pooja Sharma attended the programme.

GCW Gandhi Nagar celebrates Ozone Day

Jammu 17 September, 2016: Department of Botany of Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu celebrated Ozone Day here today.
On this occasion, a guest lecture on the topic "Climate change and Various Ecosystem of Jammu Province" was organized. Dr. Harish Chander Dutt, Assistant Professor, Department of Botany, University of Jammu, was resource person. He spoke at length on the causes and consequences of climate change including five mass extinctions and how species are disappearing at an alarming rate. He also gave an account of the state of various ecosystems in Jammu region ranging from sub-tropical, temperate to alpines and emphasized upon the need for their conservation and preservation while acting more locally.
Prof. Suchitra Saproo, Head of Chemistry Department in College, who was chief guest of the event, appreciated the department of Botany to organize a guest lecture on such an important topic, and underlined the need of continued efforts to spread awareness among masses especially youth and students about changing the climate change.
Earlier, Dr. Suman Sharma, Head of Botany Department, in her welcome address, highlighted the importance of ozone layer to save life on the planet earth and how the human activities at one place are causing ozone depletion at other places at global level. She stressed upon the need of preserving the ozone layer by minimizing the release of chloro-floro carbons and other pollutants.
Prof. Mala Basin presented vote of thanks. A large number of students and staff members attended the programme. Chief Minister’s Scooty Scheme for College going girl students

Chief Minister’s Scooty Scheme for College going girl students was launched in Govt. College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu. On this occasion Hon’ble Chief Minister of J&K State Ms. Mehbooba Mufti gave the girl students the keys of empowerment and independence by sponsoring 150 scooties at 50% subsidy to the students having low income. Hon’ble Speaker J&K Legislative Assembly, Sh. Kavinder Gupta, Hon’ble Deputy Chief Minister, J&K Dr. Nirmal Kumar Singh, Hon’ble Minister of Education, J&K Mr. Naeem Akhter, Hon’ble M.L.As, M.L.C’s, Police Officers and member of Civil Society were present. Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College welcomed the guests and hailed the initiative of Hon’ble Chief Minister by giving an opportunity to be self reliant and confident while riding scooties and feeling independent. Mr. Issadut Hussain, OSD to Hon’ble Chief Minister introduced the scheme. Addressing the students Hon’ble Chief Minister called scooty a tool of independence and a rebellion against man who set rules for women to keep them as subordinates. She also added that she wanted a girl to lead a free life mentally and physically and her mobility is synonymous of her independence, self confidence and self asscertion. Hon’ble Minister for Education also stated that this is a way to strengthen the women in a male dominated society and this initiative will definitely make to free them of the conventional society that puts barriers in their growth as a human being. Hon’ble Deputy Chief Minister quoting from history traced the contribution of women for a wholesome and peaceful society. Prominent among them were present, Divisional Commissioner, Jammu Dr. Pawan Kotwal, I.G.P Jammu Mr. Danish Rana and D.C Jammu Mr. Simrandeep Singh. Prof. Shivani Sharma presented formal vote of thanks. The programe was coordinated by Prof. Revika Arora and Prof. Neelam Thapa.

 

NSS Unit of College celebrated Teacher's Day

Govt. College for Women, Gandhi Nagar in collaboration with the NSS Unit of College celebrated Teacher's Day to pay a glowing tribute to Dr. S.Radhakrishnan on his birth anniversary for rendering commendable services to the teaching profession. On this occasion Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College was the Chief Guest. The function began with the lighting of the traditional lamp followed by the floral tribute to Dr. S.Radhakrishnan. Dr. Kiran Bakshi congratulated the students for taking an initiative to celebrate the birth anniversary of living legend and hoped that this day will continue to maintain the pristine glory and sacredness of the teacher-taught relationship and also reminds us the role of teachers in building their personalities in the changing scenario. The students gave a mesmerizing performance and expressed their gratitude for their teachers in the form of self composed poems, songs and speeches. The programme was conducted by students of the College.

 

4th Women Science Congress

A three day’s long 4th Women Science Congress in collaboration with J&K Science, Technology & Innovation Council, Department of Science & Technology, J&K State culminated in Govt. College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu. In this Congress eleven technical sessions were held in which 200 delegates participated. Besides this plenary talks and invited lectures were held by Scientists, Doctors, Professors and academicians. On this occasion Sh. Kavinder Gupta, Hon’ble Speaker, J&K Legislative Assembly was the Chief Guest. Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College and Patron of Science Congress welcomed the guests. She stated that the science congress had really motivated the young budding scientists to accomplish higher goals. Dr. Anupama Gupta, Organizing Secretary read out the report of the science congress in which she discussed the contributions made by the luminaries and participants in and out of the state who made this event a great success. Hon’ble Chief Guest in his valedictory speech hailed the organizers of the College for holding, inquisitive and innovative Women Science Congress that has given students different options to choose their career in various science oriented streams. He further added that the more participation of women is required in this field and the girl students will definitely outshine their opponent sex in achieving excellence.
Science exhibition in which ten schools of Jammu Province participated is also adjudged. DPS, Jammu declared first, Army Public School Jammu Cantt and K.V No.1, Jammu shared second position whereas Govt. Model Higher Secondary School, Domana secured third position. Besides this two consolation prizes went in favour of Govt. Girls Higher Secondary School, Mubarak Mandi and Air Force School, Jammu Cantt. In Poster presentation Shikha Sharma from Bio-technology got first position, Harsha Sharma from Chemical Sciences got second position, Nazia Bi and Ratika Sharma shared third position in Life Sciences and Physics & Electronics respectively. Consolation prize went in favour of Bilquessa Bhat from Bio-technology. A symposium was also held on "Cutting Edge Innovation by Women in Science & Technology" in which twelve students participated 1st , 2nd prizes were bagged by Afsaan Farooq and Bhavya Padha of GCW, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu and 3rd prize bagged by Sadiya Farooq of GDC, Thannamandi. Prof. Mala Basin presented formal vote of thanks and programme was coordinated by students of the College.

 

4th J&K Women Science Congress (JKWSC)

A three day's 4TH J&K Women Science Congress was inaugurated in Govt. College for women Gandhi Nagar Jammu in collaboration with J&K Science Technology and Innovation Council, Department of Science and Technology, J&K w.e.f 1st to 3rd of September 2016. On this occasion Prof. Poonam Dhawan, Dean Academic Affairs, University of Jammu was the chief guest, Dr. B.A zargar, Department of Mathematics, University of Kashmir was guest of honour whereas Prof. Vibha Tandon, Chairperson, Special Centre for Molecular Medicine, Jawahar Lal Nehru University (JNU), New-Delhi was the key note speaker. The programme began by lighting of lamp followed by invoking the blessings of Goddess Saraswati. Dr. Kiran Bakshi , Principal of the college and Patron of the Congress welcomed the Guests, Women Scientists, Scholars, Researchers, Academicians by adorning the morning by their presence . She laid emphasis that our young students will get aspired by their mentors and will reach at the pinnacle of their glory. Dr Anupama Gupta, Organizing Secretary of the Science Congress in her address highlighted the contribution of women who set the landmarks in their respective fields and presented a detail report of the event.
The Hon’ble Chief Guest while addressing the audience said that in present time women are not less than men but their representations in science has to be encouraged by motivating and guiding our young students to persue Science and Technology based courses. She also released directory of young women scientist and abstract book of the participants. Prof. Vibha Tandon in her presentation on focal theme “Women in Science : Challenges and opportunities” motivated the girls to opt it as a profession. To instill confidence and boost their moral she named few sciencetists who have brought accolades and won fame worldwide by showing their affiliations and love for science and research. The exhibition of models were made by school and college students on the basic concepts of science and was also inaugurated. Plenary Session, guest lectures, oral presentations and Poster Presentation will take place in different technical sessions on three consecutive days. A large no. of students, scholars in and around the state participated in it. Prof. Amitpal Kour presented formal vote of thanks and programme was coordinated by students of College.

 

432nd Vanmahotsava Tree Talk in GWC Gandhi Nagar

11 August,2016: To enthuse green enthusiasm among undergraduate students of Govt Women college Gandhi Nagar, Red Cross Unit of the college in collaboration with Department of Ecology, Environment & Remote sensing organized a green interaction here today.
Prof Kiran Bakshi, Principal of College while welcoming O P Sharma IFS, Director Ecology, Environment & Remote sensing for 432nd Tree Talk highlighted age old reverence for plants & animals with focus on sacred tree planting around temples, gurdwaras, churches & mosques to mark ongoing tree planting during monsoon season. While applauding role of student community in nature conservation, she appealed students to popularise use of herbal cosmetics, shampoos, health tonics, herbal teas and medicinal sherbats.
O P Sharma, Director Ecology Environment & Remote sensing shared his vision on forest biodiversity and need for theme based tree planting to establish Chywanprash vatikas, Cosmetic herbal corners, Medicinal Tree groves, Edible Tree garden, Threatened Plant conservatory, Wild food Parks, Forest food tourist corners and Shivalik Biodiversity Belts. .Fig tree diversity of Shivaliks need to be revived by fig tree planting as primates and avian fauna finds its food sustenance in figs.Olives, ,Wild pears, Karaunda, Trimbal, Rumbal, Phagwara, Kainth, Peepal, Bargad, Ber, Kakoha, Bel, Kaith, Amla, Harad, Baheda need to be planted in forest blanks and wastelands around school & colleges. Vanmahotsava concept was given by then union Agriculture Minister K M Munshi in 1949 and first Vanmahotsava was organised in 1950. Bheem di Bani at Sandrani near Chadai, Kadamb grove at Jatwal, Pohu sacred grove at Chandigam are fine examples of community conserved forest patches. Sacred water bodies at Mansar, Bhaid Devta, Gangbal, Mattan have played significant role in fish conservation. Community conservation efforts need to be further strengthened and propagated in the interest of resilient ecology. On the occasion Periwinkle & Coleus potted plants and Vanmahotsava pamphlets were also distributed among participants.
Red Cross Unit co-ordinator, Dr. Ashaq Malik while sharing his views emphasised role of community conservation to conserve biodiversity. Lesser known trees like Ban Rawadi, Pajja Prunus cerasoides is an aromatic tree of hills, its autumn flowering provides forage for bees when no other blooms are available. Rhododendron arboreum tree called Had-dhull fascinates tourists at DKG. National tree of China, Ginkgo biloba is considered as Living fossil tree due to its long evolutionary standing among all trees, it appeared 272 million years ago, tolerated Hiroshima Atomic attack in 1946 and still survives. Trees bind all communities as all get water, food, health security from forests. Sufi saint Sheikh ul Alam aptly quoted -Ann poshi teli ,Yeli Van poshi.

The Prime Minister’s Special Scholarship Scheme

The Prime Minister’s Special Scholarship Scheme began at Govt. College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu w.e.f.26.07.2016 to 03.08.2016 for J&K students. In this year scholarships amounting to Rs.75.00 crore available under PMSSS. The counselling are available for Engineering and General courses. Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College along with staff members facilitated the smooth conduct of counseling session to avoid any further chaos and confusion. On this first day 400 students have been called for Counselling on merit basis. Mrs. Neetu Gupta, Special Secretary to Higher Education, J&K Government, Prof. Ajeet Angral, Principal, GGM College and AICTE members were present during the counseling sessions.

Four NSS volunteers of Govt. College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu named Ms. Komal Sharma, Ms. Uzma Lateif Kohli, Ms. Jyoti Charak and Ms. Sarish Gupta were awarded with the pretigious V.C Award by Jammu University. The volunteers have been appreciated for their outstanding community services. The award was presented by the NSS Unit of University of Jammu. Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the institution congratulated the volunteers on being conferred with the V.C Award.

NCC cadets of GCW Gandhi Nagar Jammu celebrated the International Yoga day on 21st June 2016.

A team from Patanjali Yog Samiti under the leadership of Prof. Uma Sharma performed the aasans with cadets. The team composed of Ms. Adarsh Sharma and Ms. Khushi. The cadets performed all the aasans with great enthusiasm. Principal of the college Dr. Kiran Bakshi lauded the cadets for their enthusiasm in the celebration of Yoga Day and adopting Yogasans as a tool for healthy living The programme was coordinated by Dr. Sudhanshu Sharma, NCC officers Lt. Govt. College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu bagged 11 positions in B.A/B.Sc./B.Com Part III Examination for the session 2015-2016. In Science Stream Ms. Damini Sharma, Ms. Meeankshi Dhar and Ms. Harshdeep Kour got 6th, 7th & 8th positions respectively. In Arts Stream Ms.Geetanjali, Ms. Vani Choudhary, Ms. Janu Verma and Ms. Himmat Sharma got 3rd, 8th, 9th & 10th position respectively while in Commerce Stream Ms. Jatinder Kour, Ms. Ankita Gupta, Ms. Anukriti Sharma and Ms. Palak Bindra got 3rd, 6th, 7th & 8th positions respectively. Govt. College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu initiated three day’s long workshop on ‘Digital Literacy’ under Prime Minister’s Vision of National Digital Literacy Mission in collaboration with I-Tech Learning Centre, Jammu for its adopted school i.e. Govt. Girls High School, Gandhi Nagar. The workshop is aimed at promoting IT skill in students in inculcating Literacy regarding computer Level I w.e.f.2nd to 4th June 2016. In the inaugural session Dr. Kiran Bakshi, principal of the college was the chief guest. Speaking on the occasion she stressed upon the need of acquiring this skill to be successful entrepreneurs in this digital age and facilitate the process of e-studies besides the books. She also told them to avail the opportunity and be the partners in innovation and information technology. In order to develop this skill a group comprising of more than 30 school students participated. The resource person for the technical sessions shall be Mr. Shehraz.

In order to develop this skill two groups comprising of more than 60 students were made to facilitate the technical sessions in Digital Literacy. It was coordinated by Dr. Anupama Gupta.

JUET coaching

JUET coaching classes began in Govt. College for Women Gandhi Nagar Jammu wherein students of this college as well as girl students from other colleges of the province joined the coaching classes crossing the toll 550. The coaching is provided by efficient and trained teachers of the college. Mock tests will be given to them to familiarize them with the examination pattern of the Entrance Test. Students of different streams are taking keen interest in the coaching being provided by the college. Principal of the College Dr. Kiran Bakshi also interacted with students and encouraged them to take maximum benefits from the teachers. Dr. Jugal K. Internal Quality Assurance Cell of GCW Gandhi Nagar organized Alumni Meet in the College Auditorium. On this Occasion Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College was the Chairperson. She welcomed the Alumni and called them the most precious human resource carved by this institution and also called upon them to revoke the memories of their college days by once again diving into the past. Prof. Padmini Tickoo made a stupendous performance by reciting Sitar which spell bound the audience. Alumni meet served the purpose of bringing the teachers and the students on the same platform where they share the reminiscences of the time as a student in their life. They also pledged to strengthen the institution. Dr. Revika Arora messemarized the audience by her performance of semi classical dance. Ms. Juhi Mohan RJ 92.7 Big FM, alumnus of the College divulge everybody into nostalgia and playing fun games. Dr. Harjeet Kaur, Dr. Sanjeet Kaur, Mr. Dushyant won everybody’s heart by singing a melodious gazal. Alumnus faculty of the College gave a fusion dance performance. Equal Opportunity Cell of Govt. College for Women Gandhi Nagar jammu

The Equal Opportunity Cell of Govt. College for Women Gandhi Nagar jammu organized a Guidance- cum- Counseling session regarding  various scholarship schemes for students belonging to SC/ST/OBC and other disadvantaged sections of society, today on 12th of April 2016. Prof. Geetanajali Multani, Associate Prof. in English and Incharge, Scholarships was the resource person on the occasion. Prof. Multani apprised the students of various scholarship schemes provided by the State and Central Govt. for the benefit of the needy and meritorious students who wish to pursue Higher studies but due to lack of financial capacity fail to do so.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the college encouraged the students to avail the benefits and opportunities provided to them by the college and other organizations and excel in academics as well as in extra curricular activities.
More than 90 students participated in the programme . The members of the Equal Opportunity Cell namely Prof. Diskit Angmo, Prof. Mohinder Pal, Prof. Renu Angurana and Prof. Ramzan Ali were also present.

Internal Quality Assurance Cell of GCW, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu organized a Parent Teacher Meet in presence of Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College. Dr. Surinder Sharma, Convener IQAC welcomed the parents for their gracious presence and asked them to give their valuable suggestions for further growth of the institution. Dr. Kiran Bakshi interacted with the parents and motivated them to come forward with the valuable suggestions for the welfare of the institution to remove obstacles and create a hassle free environment for the students to learn. She also advised parents to encourage their wards to participate in different extra-curricular activities so that they outshine their latent talent. A panel of senior faculty members was invited on the stage to answer the queries of the parents. A healthy interaction was held between parents and teachers in which parents discussed the various aspects related to the academic activities. Prof. Revika Arora introduced them with the varied activities undertaken by the institution and acquainted the parents to avail the facilities offered by the institution. Prof. Anupama Gupta presented formal vote of thanks whereas Dr. Revika Arora coordinated the programme. It was attended by all the faculty members and students of the institution.

On this occasion Swami Chaturvedi founder trustee of Swami Ramanuja Mission Trust was the Chief Guest whereas Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College was the Presiding Officer. The programme began by lighting of the lamp followed by keynote address by Dr. Kiran Bakshi. While addressing the audience stressed upon the need of illuminating the society with the spread of education to all. She also stated this is the only powerful tool to shed darkness and ignorance and bring the people closer for the harmonious and non-violent society. One of the key speaker Jasson Torioano from New York also quoted the words of Nelson Mandela that education is the most powerful weapon to change the world for peaceful society. Swami Chaturvedi, Hon’ble chief guest also focused upon on the holistic development of education which can only transform the society. He also opined that peace, development, security and education are all interlinked – a sound education can only herald the peace which brings development and security together. Combined Annual Training Camp (CATC)

NCC cadets of Govt. College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu participated in Combined Annual Training Camp (CATC) held at Srinagar w.e.f.23rd March, 2016 to 31st March 2016. Cadets participated and won prizes and medals in various competitions such as Firing, Tug of War, Boat Pulling, Semaphore, Group Dance, Solo Dance, Group Song, Drill etc. Cadet Priyanka Choudhary got best cadet award. Principal of the College, Dr. Kiran Bakshi congratulated the cadets and lauded their efforts for their exceptional performance and wished them good luck in all their initiatives. Guest Lecture in Collaboration with Radiant IAS organization

Department of Botany, Govt. College for Women Gandhi Nagar Jammu, organized a guest lecture in collaboration with Radiant IAS organization dealing with the carrier counseling for Civil Services. On this occasion, Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the college was the chief guest and Mr. Sheikh Mushtaq Ahmed, Retired IAS, Chairman Radiant IAS, was guest of honour. Prof. Ojit Kumar, Asstt. Professor, Department of Zoology and Life Sciences, in Ramjas College of University of Delhi was the resource person. He delivered a lecture on the topic “Importance of Environmental Ecology for the safer future”. He discussed the importance of various interactions among various plants and animal species which finally led to the biodiversity of any area and affect the co-existence of flora, fauna and human beings. The staff of department of botany , environmental sciences and students from all the streams of the college were present. At the end students interacted with the Resource Person. Dr. Suman Sharma, HOD, Department of Botany coordinated the proceddings of programme and presented vote of thanks.

Ms. Shivika Thakur of Govt. College for Women, Gandhi Nagar Jammu brought laurels to the College as well as University of jammu by clinching 1st position and overall trophy in RESOURGENCE

Ms. Shivika Thakur of Govt. College for Women, Gandhi Nagar Jammu brought laurels to the College as well as University of jammu by clinching 1st position and overall trophy in RESOURGENCE as she was selected to represent University of Jammu in “RESOURGENCE”  a cultural fest organized by Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Katra from 12th to 13th of March 2016. She also won first prize in the symposium on the Relevance of Truth and Non-violence in present era organized by Gandhi Global Family held at GGM Science College. She was also honoured with a scarf from UNO for peace.

Women Study Centre of Govt. College for Women Gandhi Nagar Jammu celebrated Women’s Day. On this occasion, Mr. Danish Rana, IPS IGP Jammu Zone was the chief guest whereas Dr. T.A Kawoos, Director Colleges, was the guest of honour. The programme began by lighting the lamp and by invoking the blessings of Goddess Saraswati.
Dr Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College welcomed the guests and acquainted them with the strength of the women who designed the programme centering upon women’s intrinsic abilities for perfection. Dr. Anjali Bhat, Convenor of the Women Study Centre threw light upon the role and importance of women studies as a discipline in this institution. Girls Students of the college also performed Skit on Women Empowerment, Punjabi and Dogri Skit. They also performed contemporary Dance, Solo Dance, Nukkad Natak, Freedom Dance, Punjabi and Dogri skit  all woven around women issues. Dr. Ashu Vashisht read the report highlighting the various activities performed by the centre in the college to sensitize and aware the women about their rights and duties. Our Hon’ble chief guest appreciated the women power displayed by the Women Study Centre of the College and congratulated girls for the best education they received from this institution through this centre. T.A Kawoos also shared his thoughts and advised students to become the ambassadors of change in the society. It was attended by the students and faculty of the college. NCC Cadets of GCW Gandhi Nagar brought laurels to the college by qualifying 1st Round of “India Trials” held at Trivandrum, Kerala in Riffle Shooting Championship

NCC Cadets of GCW Gandhi Nagar brought laurels to the college by qualifying 1st Round of “India Trials” held at Trivandrum, Kerala in Riffle Shooting Championship. Cadet Shefali kalgotra and Cadet Rashmi Verma of two J&K Girl Battalion of Alfa company, NCC Jammu  will now participate in 2nd Round of “India Trials” at New Delhi in  the 1st week of April. They began their journey of success by taking shooting practices from camping ground, Nagrota. Earlier they were selected for North Zone Shooting Championship at Chandigarh. They also participated in G.V Mavalankar shooting championship held at Kolkata wherein shefali got bronze medal by securing 3rd Rank and Rashmi got 4th rank. They also qualified 59th National Shooting Championship held at New Delhi in Dec. 2015 wherein Shefali and Rashmi both clinched 13th and 14th rank respectively at All India Level. In our initiative in creating awareness towards Swatchh Bharat Abhiyan among students of GCW, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu Department of Philosophy under the guidance of incharge H.O.D Prof. Meeru Abrol organized a Symposium today. Students spoke on length to enlighten their fellow students. They displaced charts in the college premises to bring awareness.
Chief Guest on the occasion was principal of the College Prof. Kiran Bakshi. She advised students to adopt at least one plant in the college premises so that it could flourish. She also emphasized that as healthy mind flourishes in a healthy and clean body, so does humans flourish in clean surroundings. The program was also attended by staff of department Ms. Shalini Gupta and Mr. Dinesh Jamwal.

On this occasion Prof. T.A.Kawoos, Director Colleges, Higher Education Department was the Chief Guest, Dr. M.A.Bhat, Joint Director DST was the Special Guest whereas Dr. Neelu Rohmetra, Rector Kathua Campus and Director ICCCR and HRM was the Resource Person. The programme began by lighting the lamp and by invoking the blessings of goddess Saraswati. Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College welcomed the guests and highlighted the need of organizing Science Fair to give impetus to young minds for innovation and discoveries. Dr. Anupama Gupta, Convenor of this exhibition in her address urged students to invent and innovate something new to move ahead in life. Prof. Neelu Rohmetra presented key note address on “Make in India” which stresses upon making India self reliant and self sufficient by being manufacturer and distributor in the world. It also invites the investors to invest and boost the make in India campaign. Students also presented Skit on Incredible India. Symposium was also organized on “Innovations & Make in India” in which large number of students deliberated. Poster making competition also held on this theme. An exhibition was also inaugurated in which 24 Schools and Degree Colleges of Jammu Province participated. Students made beautiful models on a novel idea to alter the traditional image of India which has been shown marching a head with new scientific inventions. Our Hon’ble Chief Guest also encouraged students to come out with new ideologies, pioneer new ideas and explore the underlying scientific potential to take India to zenith. Mathematics Deptt. of GCW Gandhi Nagar, Jammu, today organized an “Awareness Campaign’’ under the aegis of Swatchh Bharat Abhiyaan launched by our worthy Prime Minister, Mr. Narender Modi. Students of the Deptt. brought awareness in the college premises by reciting poems, performing Natak and doing mathematical equations to inspire their fellow students.
A pledge was also taken by the students to keep their surroundings clean. They also gave the message of Reuse and Recycle by presenting a bouquet made out of recyclable material, to the chief guest on the occasion Prof. Dr. Kiran Bakshi and the programme was initiated by Prof. Meeru Abrol, HOD Mathematics along with the others members of the Deptt.

A tearful adieu was given to outgoing students of B.A. /B.Sc.B.Com –III by the 2nd year and Sem- IV Students of GCW Gandhi Nagar. On this occasion Dr. Kiran Bakshi Principal of the college was the chief Guest. In her address she wished good luck, good fortune and good future ahead to all the outgoing students and advised them to secure their future with good Jobs and discretion. A variety programmed and beauty contest was also held in which Ms. Namrata Chib was crowned as Miss GCW, Gandhi Nagar, Ms. Priyanka Bhagat judged as first Runner up, Ms. U.S.Lima was declared as second Runner up whereas Ms. Afreen was declared as Third Runner Up. The adjucator to this event was Prof. Minnie Sharma, Dept. of Home Science, Prof. Aekta Gupta, Dept. of English and Prof. Shivani Manchanda , Dept. of Economics. Career Counselling Cell of Govt. College for Women

The Career Counselling Cell of Govt. College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu in collaboration with Radiant Institute of Career Development organized a workshop on 19th February, 2016 with special focus on Civil Services Examinations.
Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College was the Chief Guest on the occasion whereas Jenab Sheikh Mushtaq (IAS) Fomrer Commissioner/Secretary, Higher Education Department, J&K Government was the Guest of Honour. Mr. Shamim Anwar was Technical Expert for the workshop.
The programme began with presentation of saplings to the guests followed by lighting of the lamp by the dignitaries. Dr. Anjali Bhat, Convenor Career Counselling Cell in her welcome note pointed out that for women to be empowered there is no better way than to join civil services and be part of the decision making. Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College in her key note address threw light upon the empowerment of women by providing them with opportunities for economic independence and building their managerial skills by encouraging women to participate in more competitive fields like the civil services. Jenab Shiekh Mushtaq delivered a very engaging motivational talk aided by power-point presentation with regard to career opportunities in general and civil services in particular. He exhorted the students to have indomitable courage to achieve their dreams by facing every challenge. Identifying one’s talents and potentials is the key towards realizing one’s goals in life, he said. He further emphasized that bureaucracy is a very challenging domain but the aspirants would do well if they faced the challenges with a humanistic approach. He concluded by dwelling upon the syllabi for KAS examination and gave practical suggestions to the young women aspirants. Thereafter Mr. Shamim Anwar engaged the students in a very healthy interactive session wherein he highlighted the importance of strong lateral thinking while attempting the civil services examinations. The programme ended with presentation of vote of thanks by Dr. Anupama Gupta, Co-Convenor Career Counselling Cell.

Home Science Department of GCW Gandhi Nagar ,Jammu launches one day cleanliness drive under “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan”
The students of the Department participated in Slogan Writing Competition which were displayed in the college. Later the staff and students of the department actively participated in cleaning the classrooms, laboratories and adjoining areas.
Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the college lauded the efforts of the staff and students and congratulated them for contributing towards “Swachh Bharat”. She also motivated and encouraged the students to make cleanliness a habit.
Prof. Sudha Gupta, Head of the Department, and other staff members pledged to maintain a clean environment in the college in general and the department premises in particular and infuse the positive vibes in students as well.

P.G Departm,ent of Food Science and Technology of GCW Gandhi Nagar launched one day cleanliness drive under “Swach Bharat Abhiyan”. Students and staff members of the department participated by cleaning the classromms, laboratories, library and adjoining area of the department. Plants were planted in the pots and posters were made and ounted on the walls of the department. Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College appreciated the students for doing this remarkable job. She encouraged them to adopt it as a way o life as good virtues and God resides in the neat environment. Dr. Anuradha Gandotra, Head of the Department, Staff members and students took oath to maintain a clean department and create a clear environment so as to infuse positively. Principal of the College, Dr. Kiran Bakshi appreciated the work done by the students and the staff members.

Govt. College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu launched a Swachh Bharat Week as a commemoration of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan – a step to make India Clean and Green. It started with a signature campaign. Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College flagged off the rally to landmark the occasion. While addressing the students, Dr. Kiran Bakshi applauded the efforts of the students to keep the Institution and its surroundings neat and clean and also urged them to make your homes and vicinity tidy as a extension of this drive so that our country will become a best place devoid of all kinds of pollution and waste.

During the weeklong celebration the department will conduct various activities related to theme of “Clean and Green India” namely Poster Making, Slogan Writing, Plantation Drive, Cleanliness Drive and activities of making best out of waste. Dr. Satinder Kour, Head, Department of Zoology also told the students to inculcate this mission as a part of your good habbit so that we can dream of a healthy tomorrow. In order to make the campus clean and green, the students and staff of Botany Department cleaned the Department, Botanical garden and adjoining area. The students painted the pots, whitewashed the stones, watered the plants and planted the saplings in the garden.

Principal of College, Dr. Kiran Bakshi, who was chief guest on the occasion, appreciated the efforts of Botany Department in general and students in particular to make the campus clean and green. This is an ideal step to act locally and think globally while fulfilling the dreams of our worthy Prime Minister Sh. Narender Modi and as envisioned by father of Nation Mahatma Gandhi.

Generation Gap: So Close Yet too far

Department of English in collaboration with Literary and Language Club of GCW Gandhi Nagar organized a one day Inter College seminar on “Generation Gap: So Close Yet too far” in which two participants were invited from different colleges On this occasion Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College was the chief guest whereas Dr. Geetanjali Rana, Associate Prof. from GCW Parade and Prof. Rita Jitender, Former Principal were the guest speakers. The Programme began by invoking the blessings of Lord Ganesha and by lighting the ceremonial lamp. Prof. Seema Mir, Head, Department of English welcomed the guests and presented key note address focusing upon the emerging generation gap prevalent in the society. She urged youngsters to take a serious note of this problem otherwise all experienced minds would plunge into darkness . participants expressed their views upon the rampant problem of Generation Gap. Students also presented a skit, self composed poem, a song dedicated to mother and an emotional documentary “Khat” was also shown to the audience. Dr. Kiran Bakshi Principal of the College was emotionally moved while addressing the students. She opined that our elders had spent quality time upon us, investing in us, educating and seeing us growing and taking wings of imagination. They drained their physical and emotional energy fulfilling our desires. Now its our earnest duty to show love and concern selflessly when they really require us physically in their weak old age. Understanding the problems of these aged people will create a suitable environ for them to live. Dr. Geetanjali Rana and Dr. Rita Jitender moved the audience by sharing their views in the open house discussion. Students also interacted and put forth their suggestions to abridge this gap. The adjucators to this event were Prof. Shruti Sharma, Prof. Aekta Gupta and Prof. Manisha Kohi. Ms. Ashimta Sahini from Govt. College for Women Gandhi Nagar bag 1st prize whereas Mr. Faisal Arif Rishu from M.A.M College clinched 2nd prize and 3rd prize went in favour of Ms. Ragini Gupta of the host college. Students of B.A Honours coordinated the programme whereas Ms. Jilmil Mengi presented vote of thanks.

On this occasion, Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College was the chief guest. Students of the Department sang melodious songs worshipping Godess Saraswati on her birth anniversary. Dr. Kiran Bakshi greeted everybody with her best wishes and acquainted students with the importance of this festival which bring happiness, joy, sweet fragrance and blossoms of beautiful flowers symbolizing the good times ahead. NSS Unit

NSS Unit of GCW, Gandhi Nagar in collaboration with Red Cross Society organized the Blood Donation Camp. A large number of students and teaching staff came forward for the noble cause. Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College urged students to donate generously the blood which will be utilized by the needy people. Prof. Amitpal Kaur, NSS Programme Officer, Prof. Ashwani Khajuria and other staff members voluntarily donated the blood.

Cadet Ravinder Kaur and Cadet Jyoti participated in Belle Dance. Cadet Shalini selected in Guard of Honour and Cadet Baljeet Kaur participated in Flag area competition. Cadet Garima Charak was adjuged as best cadet of India in Senior Wing. She was awarded a cash prize and batton by Lt. General Anirudh Chakraborty D.G NCC. Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College congratulated the cadets and NCC officer of the College for their hard work and dedication which put them on the path of success by presenting contingent at National Level. She also told cadets to motivate and be a role model for others to emulate.

She also got 1st position in the 6th Annual Inter-state Silver Rolling Trophy. 2nd Consolation in Governor’s 1st Annual North Zone Inter-University debating competition held at University of Kashmir. 3rd position in Goernor’s 1st Annual North zone Inter University Declamation Contest held at University of Jammu. Valedictory Function entitled Good Health and Skill Development

10 Days winter camp w.e.f 29th of January to 8th of Feb. 2016 concluded in Govt. College for Women Gandhi Nagar Jammu. On this occasion, Dr. Vishavraksha, Coordinator NSS, Jammu University was the chief Guest. Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College welcomed the guests and felicitated students on completing this winter camp which involved a myriad of activities focused on skill development. Prof. Amit Pal Kour, NSS Programme Officer read out the report in which she discussed the activities undertaken by this camp. Students also presented a cultural programme on the theme “Save Girl Child”

Students also expressed their review in the form of feedback. Dr. Vishavraksha while skeaking on the occasion focused upon the aims of NSS to make the volunteer as a good human being and to serve the society with zeal and selflessness. Career Counselling Cell

The Career Counselling Cell of Govt. College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu organized a six day workshop on a series of topics. The workshop was conducted in two phases. The first phase was conducted from 21st January to 23rd January, 2016 whereas the second phase began on 4th February and concluded on 6th of February, 2016. Speaking on the valedictory function, Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College said that the workshop was aimed at equipping the students with knowledge and skills so as to enable them to grow into confident individuals capable of making right career choices. The resource persons of the workshop included Mr. Mahesh Dutt Bali, Prof. Kavita Suri, Dr. Neelima G, Dr. Manisha Kohli, Prof. Amitpal Kaur. They expressed their views on the topics Women and Entrepreneur Skills, Life Skills, Personality and Clothing, Women and Human Rights, Personality Development and Communication Skills. All the sessions were very informative. The students interacted zealously in all the sessions. The workshop was coordinated by Prof. Anjali Bhat, Convenor Career Counselling Cell.

Best Cadet

NCC Cadet Garima Charak of Govt. College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu brought laurels to the State by fetching most coveted award "Best Cadet" of India in Senior Wing (Army). She was the first one from the State to reach at the pinnacle of this success. She was also awarded Silver Trophy, Silver Medal, a Batton and a cash prize of Rs.14000/- by Mr. Anirudh Chakraworty, Director General NCC. She outshined in all the events viz. drill, shooting, written test, cultural event participation, briefing, group discussion and interview with the Director General NCC. Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College while hailing her achievements congratulated her for great success and bench mark achieved at a National Level. She also told her to motivate and guide other cadets to develop these exceptional qualities to bring glory to the State and as well as to the nation. Lt. Language club and NSS unit of Govt. College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu organized a lecture on Broadcasting Skills. On this occasion Dr.Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College was the Chief Guest whereas Dr. Rita Jitender (Former Secretary, J&K Academy of Art, Culture & Languages) was the Resource Person. Prof. Seema Mir, Convener of the Language Club welcomed the guest and spoke on the importance of acquiring broadcasting skills for grooming the overall personality. Dr. Kiran Bakshi spoke about right presentation which is the backbone of the broadcasting skills, the Resource Person Prof. Rita Jitender emphasized on the use of stress, intonation and voice modulation while making presentation. She further made the students familiar with the variable speech patterns that help in Radio and other broadcasting services. She also traced the origin of Radio Kashmir Jammu and acquainted the students with the different modalities required to become a perfect Radio Jockey and announcer. Ms. Ritu Sharma presented a vote of thanks. The programme was attended by Prof. Shruti Sharma, Prof. Aekta Gupta, Prof. Urmil Rani, Prof. Geetanjali Multani, Prof. Diskit Angmo, Prof. Vandana Khajuria and other faculty members alongwith the students.

NSS Unit and Department of EVS of GCW, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu organized ‘Tree Talk’ to promote usefulness of plants in day-today’s life. On this occasion Mr. O.P.Vidyarthi (IFS) was the Resource Person and Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of this College was the Chief Guest. The programme began by paying floral tribute to the father of the Nation Mahatama Gandhi who attained martyrdom on this day. Worthy Resource Person acquainted students with the different species of plants and their uses. Dr. Kiran Bakshi also stressed upon the need of preserving and cultivating plants for betterment of society. On the occasion Dr. Suman Bala, HOD Botany, Dr. Ashaq Malik, Dr. Deepak Pathania, Ms. Preetika Jamwal, Ms. Prerna Samyal and Ms. Anisha were also present.

Entrepreneurial Development Programmes

Govt. College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu in collaboration with Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) organized two batches of 10-days Entrepreneurial Development Programmes for the promotion of entrepreneurial skills especially for special and general category students. The programme was coordinated by Dr. Preeti Slathia from Department of Commerce and concluded today. The purpose of conducting thisprogramme was to motivate the students to establish their own units rather than looking for govt. jobs. Mr. Virender Sharma, Director MSME was the Chief Guest whereas Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College was the Guest of Honour. Dr. Sujata Slathia, Convenor of the programme highlighted the aims of conducting such programmes for creating economically self-reliant group in a society to serve the nation in the true spirit. Around 45 students participated in the respective courses. The subject experts from various fields particularly, Mr. B.B.Raina, Mr. H.C. Vaid, Mr. Anil Suri, Mr. Kashav Dutt Sharma, Mr. M.D. Bali, Prof. Rita Jitender, Dr. Jaya Bhasin, Mr. Joy Ganjoo and Mr. Manik Arora apprised the students with the present day challenges and their solutions. The themes in this programme were entrepreneurial motivation through Success Story, Goal setting, Writing business plan, Understanding State Industrial Policy, Learning various incentives & Collateral free credit facilities under Govt. sponsored schemes, project formulation, business communication, time management, importance of family support and sustaining entrepreneurship. Dr. Virender Sharma, Director MSME congratulated students for attaining such skills which will further groom them for new prospects. Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal and Geust of Honour of todays function appreciated the students for participating in these entrepreneurial based activities and assimilate knowledge for enhancement of their skills. Democracy and Electoral Participation

An Inter-College Quiz Competition was organized by the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of Govt. College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu on 21st January, 2016 to mark the National Voters Day which is celebrated every year on 25th of January. The theme for the quiz was “Democracy and Electoral Participation”. The objective of the competition was to encourage more participation by the youth and to aware them about the electoral process. As many as seven Colleges of Jammu participated in the quiz competition. The Chief Guest on the occasion was Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College. The jury of the competition comprised of Prof. Parminder Kaur, Prof. Anupama Gupta and Prof. Amitpal Kaur whereas Prof. Shivani Manchanda and Prof. Shalini Gupta acted as quiz master and scorer respectively. The programme began with the welcome note delivered by Prof. Surinder Sharma, Coordinator IQAC. It was a cut-throat competition among seven teams and the quiz was completed within 5 rounds. The programme concluded with the encouraging speech of Principal, Dr. Kiran Bakshi wherein she complemented the organizers for their enthusiastic participation. Team D from GCW, Gandhi Nagar was adjudged as 1st and Team G from GDC R.S.Pura and Team F from GDC, Samba were adjudged 2nd and 3rd respectively. Prizes were distributed among the winners and the participants. Vote of thanks was delivered by Prof. Anupama Gupta.

 

Role of Physics in Applied Sciences

The Department of Physics of GCW, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu organized a symposium on the topic “Role of Physics in Applied Sciences” on 20th of January, 2016. The students of Semester 2nd and Semester 4th participated in the programme enthusiastically. Out of 20 participants, 09 were shortlisted for the final round to speak on the stage. All the faculty members were present to encourage the students. Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College was the Chief Guest on the occasion. Dr. Bharat Singh and Dr. Dalbir Kour gave the welcome note and thereafter Prof. Divya Sharma and Prof. Swarn Lata anchored the programme. Prof. P.K.Amla, Prof. Balraj Kumar and Dr. Sunil Dutt acted as Jury Members. Prof. Sudha Sehgal, HOD Physics announced Tania Gupta, Mehak Jamwal and Rupali Choudhary as First, Second and Third in the Competition. Prof. Shammi Kumar organized the whole symposium and expressed the vote of thanks.

 

ENTREPRENEURSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME

Govt. College for Women, Gandhi Nagar in collaboration with Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises, Govt. of India inaugurated Ten days ENTREPRENEURSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME for the promotion of entrepreneurial skills. The programme is arranged in collaboration with the Ministry for backward category candidates from 11th January to 22nd January, 2016 whereas another programme is going on for General category students from 14th January to 25th January, 2016. The course aims at providing entrepreneurial skills among educated unemployed youth so that they can be motivated and be self-dependent rather than hackering after Govt. jobs. Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College also stressed on organizing such skill oriented programmes. Mr. B.B.Raina, Partner New India Wire & Cable Industries, Mr. Anil Suri, MD Tawi Arc Electrorates Pvt. Ltd., Mr. H.C.Vaid, HOD North Polytechnical, Purkhoo Camp delivered lecture on the theme of entrepreneurial motivation through Business games, goal setting and writing buisiness plan respectively.

A total of 45 candidates have participated in the course. The diginitaries from various fields will acquaint students with their subject expertise and rich experience in coming days. Dr. Sujata Slathia, HOD Commerce, Dr. Sudhanshu Sharma, Mr. Vinnu Koul, Project Coordinator, Dr. Preeti Salathia and other faculty members of Department of Commerce were also present on the occasion.

 

Gandhi Nagar, Jammu organized Inter College Mathematics Fest

Department of Mathematics of GCW, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu organized Inter College Mathematics Fest to celebrate National Mathematics’ Day on the birth anniversary of great Indian Mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. On this occasion extension lecture, seminar and poster making competitions were held to pay a tribute to glowing soul. Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College was the Chief Guest whereas Prof. B.S.Komal, Head, Applied Mathematics MIET and Former Head, Department of Mathematics, University of Jammu, and Dr. Chander Shekhar, Principal, GDC Kargil were the Resource Persons. Dr. Anupama Gupta, Convenor of the event welcomed the Chief Guest, Resource Persons, students of the adopted Govt. High School, Gandhi Nagar, participants of the various Degree Colleges, staff and students. She threw light upon the contribution made by Ramanjujan in Mathematics and also highlighted his milestones, achieved in this field by giving Number Theory, Infinite Theory etc.Trailor of the British film on Ramanujan, “The man who knew Infinity” and Ramanujan’s magic square were also shown to students. Dr. KiranBakshi opined that life without mathematics is just a life without management. The contributions of the Indian born mathematicians inspires our students to achieve something exceptional in their life. Prof. B. S. Komal and Dr. Chander Shekhar talked in length about mathematics and its application with power point presentation. A large number of students participated in the seminar and poster making competition. It was adjucated by, Principal, GDC Kargil and Prof. B. S. Komal. In poster making competition Mr. Rahul Sharma from GDC Kathua clinched first prize whereas 2nd& 3rd prizes were bagged by Ms. Richu and ParasAnand of GCW, Parade and GCW, Gandhi Nagar respectively. Likewise in symposium 1st prize bagged by SakshiBhagat of GCW, Gandhi Nagar, 2nd& 3rd prizes were secured by Abhinav R Salgotra and Prashant Kumar of GGM Science College and Govt. MAM College respectively. The compeering was done by Kritika Mengi and Sakshi Bhagat.

Red Cross Mela Concludes at GCW Gandhi Nagar

The two day Red Cross Mela organized by the Red Cross and NSS Units of Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu concluded here on Sunday.
The two day Mela that was inaugurated by Shri. Kavinder Gupta, Speaker J&K Legislative Assembly was formally concluded by Principal of the College, Dr. Kiran Bakshi. During the mela a variety of cultural shows, fun rides, music and different stalls of games, eatables, cosmetics, garments, crockery were displayed that attracted thousands of people from all walks of life.
Dr. Bakshi, said that the main objective of organizing Red Cross Mela was to raise awareness about the philanthropic activities of Red Cross among masses to help poor and needy and honing the skills of the students and youth to lead a better life. She appreciated and thanked various organizations like Indian Red Cross Society, J&K Police, Civil Defence, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Fire Brigade, J&K Information Department, Power Development Department, Ricky Bands, and Print and Electronic media for their cooperation to make this event a maga success. The stalls of Civil Defence, SDRF and Hindustan Petroleum (HP) were the new feature in the mela, she added.
Earlier, NSS Programme officer, Prof. Amitpal Kour introduced the audience about the event. The Red Cross and NSS Volunteers Geetanjali, Sehrish, Uzma, Komal, along with other students under the supervision of NSS Programme officer, Prof. Neelam Thapa conducted the proceedings whereas NSS Programme Officer and convenor of Red Cross Unit, Dr. Ashaq Malik presented the formal vote of thanks.

NSS & Red Cross Unit of Govt. College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu organized Two Days Red Cross Mela on the theme of Skill Development in the College premises on 19th & 20th December, 2015.

In the inaugural ceremony Sh. Kavinder Gupta, Hon’ble Speaker, J&K Legislative Assembly was the Chief Guest whereas Mrs. Bindu Kavinder Gupta was the Guest of Honour, Sh. R.C.Puri, Honorary Secretary, Indian Red Cross Society and Sh. Anil Padha, Former Secretary Indian Red Cross Society, Jammu were the Special Guests. The programme began by lighting the traditional lamp by the Chief Guest and other diginatories followed by welcome address by Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College. In her address Dr. Bakshi urged students to learn the skills to lead a good and comfortable life. All the stalls were centered around honing of the skills of the students varying from culinary, boutique technology, making of flowers bouquets, is a step towards equipping the students with basics of professional competence. Inculcation of managerial, organizational and entrepreneur skills amongst the students was the main motto. She thanked representatives of different business units, students of different educational institutions, floriculture department, automobile industries, and sponsores of various units who had voluntarily come forward for the exhibition of different stalls with great enthusiasm and spirit. Sh. Kavinder Gupta, Hon’ble Chief Guest also appreciated the visionary step of the College to inculcate great social values into the students by organizing an event like this which enjoins them to their culture. The emphasis this year was on creating the awareness also, so new stalls like LPG Safety, Role of Civil Defence, SDRF were also the source of attraction to the general public. In the end balloons were released as a mark of jubilation and freedom symbolising happiness and hope. Besides other Ms. Tejinder Kaur, Deputy Controller Civil Defence, Sh. College for Women Gandhi Nagar Jammu clinched the overall Championship Trophy of 2nd State Level Inter-Collegiate Volleyball Championship for Women for the Annual Silver Rolling Volleyball Trophy instituted by Hon’ble Governor of J&K State Sh. N.N Vohra at Govt. Degree College Udhampur for the 2nd time in a row in a tough competition giving defeat to Govt. College for Women, M.A Road Srinagar.

On this occassion Mr. O P Sharma, Vidyarthi was Chief Guest whereas Mr. Ashish Tripathi, Assistant Professor in Philosophy from Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan, Kot Balwal Jammu was the resource person. The programme began by lighting the lamp. Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College presented keynote address in which she discussed the theme of Relationship of Man with Environment. She further added that environment and human beings are inter-related and any disturbance in this harmony leads to destruction. Mr. Ashish Tripathi, our worthy resource person also shared his views and traced the history of this relationship since the inception of civilization. Dr. O P Sharma Vidyarthi also highlighted natural inbuilt relationship as a great gift of God which makes them interdependent upon each other for basic needs. It was attended by the students and faculty members and Prof. Shalini Gupta from Philosophy Department presented vote of thanks.

 

GCW Gandhi Nagar Celebrates International Human Rights

Hon’ble Minister for EducJammu, 10 December, 2015: The NSS and Red Cross Units of Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu celebrated International Human Rights Day here today. On this occasion a letter writing marathon cum open house quiz on Human Rights and Duties organized. A group of 15 NSS Volunteers read out UN Secretary General’s Message, preamble and all 30 articles of Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) chartered on this day in 1948. They also explained History of UDHR and its journey to member states and protection of Human Rights under International Human Rights Law. Principal of College, Dr. Kiran Bakshi, who was chief guest on the occasion said that protection of everybody’s Human Rights can only be ensured to its fullest if everybody fulfils his/her duties to fullest. “Human Rights Education is a long-term remedy for the protection and promotion of human rights”, she added. In the marathon the students wrote letters under the campaign “Write for Rights” initiated by Amnesty International, for 12 indentified individuals around the globe this year. Red Ribbon Club of Govt. College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu organized an Aids Awareness Rally. On this occasion Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College was the Chief Guest and flagged off the rally. Dr. Manisha Kohli, Convenor Red Ribbon Club stressed upon the need of awareness of AIDS free society. Dr. Kiran Bakshi implored students to disseminate the information to all and sundry about this dreadful disease. She also said that today is taken as a reminder in continuation to World AIDS Day Awareness Programme and fighting bravely against it can be remedy and requested students to extend their helping hands to all those who are in need. She also released balloons in the air as a mark of release of suffering restless souls to solace and salvation.

Govt. College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu celebrated WORLD AIDS DAY by holding poster making competition. On this occasion Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College was the Chief Guest. A large number of students of the College participated in this competition on the theme Know Aids for healthy living. Students made beautiful posters depicting the mode of transmission of disease, cure of disease, preventive measures and declaration of rights by Supreme Court for healthy living of the Aids positive patients. Dr. Kiran Bakshi while addressing students appreciated their efforts to disseminate information to the society by being ambassadors to remove this disease. Ms. Prasthana Mandotra of B.A Part III was judged 1st where Ms. Pragati of B.A Semester I and Ms. Maisa Malik of B.A Part III were adjudged 2nd and 3rd respectively. 6th Annual Inter-state (Northern Zone) Declamation Contest for the Silver Rolling Trophy instituted by Hon’ble Governor of J&K Sh. N.N.Vohra on the topic “Is development and growth enough to reduce discontent in society”? was organized by the Department of Higher Education, Govt. of J&K at Govt. College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu on 27th November, 2015. The inaugural session commenced with lighting of the traditional lamp followed by Saraswti Vandana. Sh. Kavinder Gupta, Hon’ble Speaker, State Legislative Assembly, J&K Govt. was the Chief Guest who declared the contest open whereas Ms. Sarita Chauhan (IAS), Commissioner/Secretary, Higher Education Department was the Guest of Honour and

The valedictory session was graced by the presence of Sh. N.N.Vohra, Hon’ble Governor of J&K as the Chief Guest and Smt. Usha Vohra, First lady of the state – as the Guest of Honour, and Ms. Priya Sethi, Hon’ble Minister of State for Education, Information & Culture was the Presiding Officer. Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College welcomed the chief guest, guest of honour, presiding officer, jury members, observers, dignitaries, former and present principals of the various Degree Colleges and guests. In her welcome address Dr. Kiran Bakshi referred to this contest as a visionary step of Hon’ble Governor of J&K Sh. N.N.Vohra towards the objective of achieving socio-cultural intermingling of the states which will go a long way in fostering co-aptation, mutual bonding and understanding between the academia of the participating states. She expressed her happiness over the successful involvement of Ladakh Region in this contest. A large number of students from the Northern States of India including Delhi, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Chandigarh (UT) and J&K had participated. Ms. Sarita Chauhan (IAS), Commissioner/Secretary, Higher Education Department was overwhelmed with the deliberations and the views put forth by the students. She also stated that reducing discontent is the need of the hour and for a blissful and prosperous society, discontent should be removed from the minds of the people for the holistic development of the nation. Hon’ble Governor of J&K in his observation expressed his extreme happiness that the view expressed by the students will pave a new way and the youth being the harbinger of change will create a utopian society.

NSS Unit of GCW Gandhi Nagar Jammu organized the valedictory function of a five day Civil Defence training programmme on 26th of November 2015.

The training camp was inaugurated on 21st November, 2015 and on 26th November, 2015 a valedictory function was held. On this occasion Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College was the chief guest. In this programme NSS Volunteers were given special training in fire fighting rescue, first aid rescue techniques like lifting, transporting victim to hospital and evacuating the victims during Natural Disaster.
Dr. KIran Bakshi appreciated the student performance and their zeal towards extending Civil Defence training programme to rest of the students of the college for meeting any in advertent situation. Students took keen interest and practiced the mock drill. Sh. Alok Nanda, Dy. Chief Warden, Sh. R. Vijay Magotra Dy. Warden, Sh. Paramjeet Kumar, Chief Civil Defence were present whereas instructors for the training programme were Mr. Rajinder Kumar and Mr. Parshotam Kumar. College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu celebrated National Heritage Day as a part of ongoing National Heritage Week celebrations by staging a “Nukkad Natak” based on the theme of Save National Heritage. Students of the College showcased natak in College compound awaking the students how our beautiful monuments, sight scene places, natural resources like rivers and ponds are being defaced and polluted by folks thereby damaging and spoiling its beauty. Dr. Anupama Gupta, Convenor Workshop organizing committee welcomed the guests, participants, staff and students and threw light on Intellectual Property Rights and the need to aware students about patent rights, their infringement and punishment. Dr. Kiran Bakshi while addressing the audience stressed upon the need of knowing patent, copy rights, trade marks and infringement in a present scenario. The worthy Resource Person, Dr. R.K.Raina made a keynote address highlighting the importance of awaring one and all about Intellectual Property Rights. He also added that intellectual theft has become a common thing now a days but it is harmful to copy and emulate the other’s hardwork without acknowledging the original sources. In order to promote originality it is important to made reference to the contributions made by the predecessors in the respective fields. Dr. Ajay Gupta and Dr. R.K.Raina also elaborated the technicalities of Intellectual Property Rights in the first technical session whereas Prof. Kamal Kapoor and Dr. Parathasarathi Dass also enlighted the audience with their presentation in the 2nd technical session. Prof. Amitpal Kour, Organizing secretary read the report of the workshop. Participants also shared their views in the form of observations and the programme was coordinated by Prof. Neelam Thapa and Dr. Romika Sudan presented vote of thanks.

Gandhian Ideology promotes Peace and Harmony: Sangeeta Gupta

The Principal Commissioner of Income tax, Sangeeta Gupta felicitated NSS volunteers of Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu, for promoting Gandhian ideology in a brief function held at Income Tax office.

Ms. Sangeeta felicitated Deepanjli Slathia, Ruqiya Qazi and Sabha Sarwar Mir, the winners who bagged all three, 1st, 2nd and 3rd, prizes, in an inter-college symposium on Gandhian Ideology of Peace and Non-violence organized by Gandhi Global Family (GGF) recently.

While felicitating NSS Volunteers with a Medal depicting UN-GGF logos and a symbolic spinning wheel especially brought from Sabarmati Ashrum. Ms. Gupta said that Gandhian ideology promotes peace and harmony. She expressed her hopes that youth and students can serve as true ambassadors of peace and harmony in society while complying the ideals of Gandhian ideology of peace and non-violence which is becoming so relevant by every passing day.

President of Gandhi Global Family, J&K, Padamashri S.P. Varma, while speaking on occasion upheld the young Gandhians for promoting ideology of peace, non-violence, greater tolerance, harmony, mutual respect and understanding among communities for a better India and better world at large. Shri Varma also presented a rare photo of Mahatama Gandhi on communal harmony taken on January 18, 1948 to the commissioner.

Principal of College, Dr. Kiran Bakshi congratulated the winners and said that Gandhain ideology is solution for peace in world and students and youth can be real change makers in this direction. NSS Programme Officers Prof. Amitpal Kour, Prof. Neelam Bhagat and Dr. Ashaq Malik also appreciated the students for bringing laurels to the college.

NSS Unit of Govt. College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu organized a cleanliness drive to mark the Anniversary celebrations of the launch of Swatch Bharat Mission 2015.

On this occasion NSS volunteers of the College launched this drive to clean the college compound and urged other students also to use dustbins. Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Princpal of the College appreciated the students for being the agencies of change to bring reforms in the society and be instrumental in inculcating the habit of clean vicinity for disease free India. She also encouraged the volunteers and the students in general to fulfill the dream of Mahatma Gandhi who envisioned India marching ahead with healthy individuals taking deep breaths in fresh air and be eco friendly. A symposia was also organized on Swatch Bharat Abhiyan wherein students of the College presented their views on the importance of cleanliness and hygiene. Dr. Sudanshu Sharma was the Chief Guest on the occasion. He also motivated the students to follow the foot steps of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of nation. Schools, adopted Schools, College students, Academicians, Parents, Teachers, Block Development Officer, Chairman Adalat Committee of Gram Panchayat, Project Officer, Sarpanch, Panch and members of the Civil Society participated to ensure and fetch educational reforms for quality education and skill development. Deliberations were made on the various themes of current importance. Under these themes several questions were discussed, thematic and new proposals were suggested to frame new education policy for building and outshining India across the world. Opinion were recorded by rapporteurs at all the three levels which shall work as a footing stone to cross the boundaries of District level and to take it further to National level.

Home Science Department of GCW, Gandhi Nagar made an exhibition cum sale of Diwali Items.

This was an initiative to develop and groom students entrepreneur development skills to instill confidence among them. On this occasion Ms. Priya Sethi, Hon’ble Minister of State for Education, Information & Culture was the Chief Guest who inaugurated the Diwali Mela named Hasthkala under Skill Development Programme. The products made by the students of the Home Science Department alongwith the Food Court. Different stalls have been put up for sale including handmade articles like cushions, bags, table mats, diwan sets, table runner, rice cooker cover, rangoli colours, dias, pooja thali, eat stalls and game stalls. Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College welcomed the Chief Guest and also appreciated the hard work of the students who have made the stalls colourfulls with their beautiful preparations of hand work, embroidery and honed their owned skill. Ms. Priya Sethi, Hon’ble Minister of State for Education, Information & Culture while inaugurating the mela addressed that the real purpose of education is to link the skill with the practical knowledge so that beside completing their graduation degree programme they can establish themselves as small entrepreneur and contribute to the society with their Dast-e-Hunar. It was attended by large no. of  students, staff of the College and highly admired by the Chief Guest.

GCW Gandhi Nagar celebrates National Unity Day

Jammu, 31 October, 2015: The NSS Unit of Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu celebrated National Unity Day by organizing “Run for Unity” in the college vicinity here today.

On the occasion, the NSS volunteers of college organized “Run for Unity” to pay tribute to Sardar Vallabbhai Patel, the Iron man of India and the country’s First Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister, for his unparallel contribution in unification of the nation and freedom struggle. The programme started with Unity Pledge.

Principal of College, Dr. Kiran Bakshi who was Chief Guest on the occasion flagged off the rally that accompanied by NSS Programme Officers Prof. Amitpal Kour and Dr. Ashaq Malik and other staff members went around the college campus harbouring some 5000 female students.

Dr. Bakshi, while speaking on occasion, emphasised upon youth and students to remain united and be the pillars of nation building while following the footsteps of Sardar Patel for unification and integration of country. Unity in diversity means prosperity and growth of all, she said.

A large number of students including NSS volunteers took part in the run. Prominent among others who participated were Prof. Ajit Verma, Prof. A.K. Raina, Prof. Ashwani Khajuria, Prof. Rajni Bhagat, Dr. Sanjay Kotwal and Dr. Rajinder Manhas.

NSS Unit of Govt. College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu in collaboration with Indian Red Cross Society, Jammu culminated three day’s first aid training camp w.e.f. 27.10.2015 to 29.10.2015. On this occasion Dr. Pawan Kotwal, Divisional Commissioner Jammu was the Chief Guest whereas Sh. R.C.Puri, Secretary Indian Red Cross Society was also present on the occasion.

Students were given training to meet any kind of contingency arising out of Natural, accidental or man created disaster and to provide first aid to the victims of these accidents. Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College welcomed the guests and appreciated the initiative of NSS Unit to prepare the students as life saviours in case of any calamity. Dr. Pawan Kotwal, Divisional Commissioner Jammu stressed the need of disaster management training programmes to become regular feature so that a large no. of well trained human resource be created.

Sh. R.C. Puri, Secretary Indian Red Cross Society while speaking on the occasion asserted the students to spread this knowledge to others also so as calamity rate can be reduced. “Is development and growth enough to reduce discontent in society”? for Silver Rolling Trophy instituted by Hon’ble Governor of J&K, Sh. N.N.Vohra was organized by Department of Higher Education at Govt. College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu. The programme commenced with lighting of the traditional lamp and by invoking the blessings of Lord Ganesha followed by cultural programme. Sh. Kavinder Gupta, Hon’ble Speaker, State Legislative Assembly, J&K Government was the Chief Guest whereas S. Daleep Singh (IAS), Former Commissioner/Secretary, Transport and Prof. Nalini Kohli, Former Director Colleges, Higher Education Department were the Observers for the event. Prof. Surinder Gupta, Former Dean & Prof. Medicine, SKAUST, R.S.Pura Campus, Prof. Monika Sethi, Department of English, University of Jammu & Prof. Rita Munshi, Former Principal were the adjucators to evaluate the performance of the participants.

Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College welcomed the Chief Guest, Observers, Jury members, distinguished guests, participants and faculty members and stated that in the present scenario growing materialism has developed discontent in a society and the different deliberations of the students will definitely pave a way for reducing the stress and disgruntlement growing amongst the societies. Prof. Seema Mir presented key note address in which she discussed that this kind of contest provides vibrant and vivacious platform for exchange of ideas and emergence of new thoughts. 30 students of different Degree Colleges of Jammu Province participated and mesmerized the audience with their presentations and views to reduce discontent emanating in the masses. Sh. Kavinder Gupta, Hon’ble Speaker, State Legislative Assembly, J&K Government applauded the participants for their varied and diverse views to decrease the quantatum and magnitude of dissatisfaction from the society for its holistic development. The Jury members and Observers also shared their views.

The six students were selected for the final round of Northern Zone Inter-State Declamation Contest. The first prize was clinched by Ms. Shivika Thakur of GCW, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu, 2nd prize was won by Ms. Atika Sharma of GDC Kathua and the 3rd prize went in favour of Mr. Faisal Arif Rishu of Govt. MAM College, Jammu. Besides this the three consolation prizes were given to the students. Mr. Shubham Sharma of GDC Hiranagar, Mr. Akhilesh Kotwal, GDC Bhaderwah and Ms. Nazish Nawaz of GDC Doda were given 1st, 2nd and 3rd consolation prizes respectively. Dr. Sudhanshu Sharma, Convenor, Declamation Organizing Committee thanked one and all for their benign presence and for the successful conduct of the event.

On this occasion Sh. D.S.Oberoi, Scientist-E from NIELIT, Sh. Rajnesh Raina, Deputy Director Technical and Sh. S.K.Sharma, Assistant Director Technical were the Resource Persons. Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College hailed the guests and expressed her heart felt desire to conduct this workshop about Information Security which is the greatest threat to the society to save their data from hacking and intellectual theft. Dr. Anupama Gupta, Convenor of the Workshop presented a key note address in which she discussed the importance of knowing the cyber threats, hacking, black mailing, virus threats and damaging of the server.

S.K.Sharma our worthy Resource Persons through animatations, videos and clippings tried to educate general masses about the other aspects of internet on teenagers who become the real victim of this modern threat by their craze to reveal their personal data. They also highlighted the pros and cons of this cyber technology which the masses blindly following without being cautious about its usage and security. It was attended by large no. of students and faculty members. Prof. Amitpal Kaur, Organizing Secretary thanked one and all for their support and for making this workshop a great success.

Red Cross donates Waste Containers to GCW Gandhi Nagar

As part of Swachh Bharat Abhyan, the Indian Red Cross Society, Jammu region donated waste containers to Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar here today.

R.C. Puri, Hony Secretary, Regional Red Cross Society, Jammu handed over 10 dustbins to the college Principal Dr. Kiran Bakshi in a brief function organized by Red Cross and NSS Units of College.

While thanking the Red Cross Society for generous donation, Dr. Kiran Bakshi appreciated the efforts of Red Cross Society to the humanity in general and its role in the Swachh Bharat Abhyan in particular. She expressed her hopes that the students especially the NSS and Red Cross volunteers will take lead in keeping the college campus and their surroundings at large neat and clean as per ideals of Prime Minister’s Swachh Bharat vision 2019.

While speaking on occasion, Sh. Puri said that main objective of providing these dustbins is to build the capacity of colleges and schools to ensure better hygiene and sanitation as per standards of Swachh Bharat Abhyan. We shall be providing more waste containers to other educational institutions in near future under this campaign, he said.

GCW Gandhi Nagar organizes Blood Donation Camp

Jammu, 12 October, 2015: The NSS and Red Cross Units of Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, in collaboration with Regional Red Cross Society, Jammu and Govt PG Department of Blood Transfusion, GMC Jammu organized a Blood Donation Camp to mark National Voluntary Blood Donation Day here today.

Commissioner Secretary, Higher Education, Sarita Chouhan along with Principal of College, Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Hony Secretary, Regional Red Cross Society, Jammu, R.C. Puri, and Dr. Vijay Sawhney, Head, Blood Transfusion & Medicine Department, GMC, Jammu, inaugurated the Blood Donation Camp.

Dr. Kiran Bakshi lauded the overwhelming curiosity among the female students to donate blood so voluntarily and enthusiastically for the cause of humanity. While interacting with blood donors, Sh. Puri and Dr. Sawhney also appreciated extended volunteerism among students towards blood donation and the college at large for organizing two camps in an academic session for the past consecutive three years.

More than 30 students including NSS and Red Cross volunteers and staff members of college donated the blood on the occasion. Prof. Ashwani Khajuria (Food Science) and all three NSS Programme Officers in College Prof. Amitpal Kour, Prof. Neelam Thapa and Dr. Ashaq Malik, also Co-ordinator of Red Cross Unit, were also among the blood donors.

The National Service Scheme (NSS) volunteers of Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar shined in the symposium organized by Gandhi Global Family on the eve of International Day of Non-Violence at historic Mubarak Mandi heritage complex here on Friday. The NSS Volunteers Deepanjli Slathia, Ruqiya Qazi and Sabha Sarwar Mir led by NSS Programme Officer Dr. Ashaq Malik, bagged all three, 1st, 2nd and 3rd, prizes in the symposium that reflected life and works of apostle of Peace- Mahatma Gandhi and his philosophy of truth and non-violence. Principal of College, Dr. Kiran Bakshi appreciated the students for bringing laurels to the college, and expressed her hopes that let our words be transformed into action for bringing real change in our world. The NSS volunteers along with thousands of children, peace activities, prominent citizens, Divisional Commissioner Jammu, Dr. Pawan Kotwal, Padmashri S.P. Jammu, 01 Oct, 2015: While joining the nation and world to pay homage to apostle of peace - Mahatma Gandhi, the NSS Unit of Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar celebrated International Day of Non-Violence here today. On this occasion a symposium and a quiz competition on life and works of Mahatma Gandhi organized. Principal of College, Dr. Kiran Bakshi who was chief guest on the occasion said that there is urgent need to opt the Gandhain way of life from individual to international level for achieving sustainable peace in the world. The students especially NSS Volunteers can play pivotal role in spreading the message of truth and non-violence among the communities, she said. The programme started by paying floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi and his bhajan ‘Raghupati raghav Raja Ram...’. An NSS Volunteer read the message of UN Secretary General Ban ki Moon wherein he said ‘At a time of escalating conflicts, violent extremism, displacement and humanitarian need, the courage and determination of Mahatma Gandhi, whose birthday we celebrate today, is an inspiration for us all.’ In the symposium Radika Bali of B.A part 3rd bagged first prize and Ruqaya Qazi of semester 3rd stood second whereas Sabha Sarwar of B.Sc Semester 2nd and Deenjali Salathia of B.A. semester 1st shared the third prize. The NSS Programme officers Prof. Amitpal kour and Prof. Neelam Bhagat served as judges in the symposium. Earlier, Dr. Ashaq Malik, NSS Program Officer, introduced the audience about the programme. In the end, a quiz competition based on random questions from the topics covered during symposium was also organized. NSS volunteer Uzma Kohli conducted the proceedings of the programme.

Speaking on the occasion he expressed deep love and reverence for his teachers who contributed vicariously in his success. GCW Gandhi Nagar organizes Poster Making Competition on Biodiversity

The Department of Botany under the aegis of Science Club of Govt College for Gandhi Nagar organized poster making competition on the theme “Environment Changes – A threat to Biodiversity” here today. About two dozen students participated in this intra-college competition. Tanisha of B.Sc 1st Semester won the first prize whereas Kuljit Kour and Rakshanda Sharma of same Semester bagged 2nd and third prize respectively. Palvi Gujral of B.Sc 3rd Semester and Stuti Sharma of B.Sc 1st Semester received the consolation prizes. Prof. Sudha Sehgal, Prof. Indu Khajuria, Prof. Kamlesh Slathia, Prof. Meru Abrol and Prof. Neelam Thapa served as the judges of this poster making competition. Principal of College, Dr. Kiran Bakshi, who was Chief Guest on the occasion, said that climate change is the major concern before humankind and it becomes pertinent for every member of society to work together to protect environment for ensuring his own survival, the future generations and variety of life therein. “There is urgent need to inculcate the eco-friendly attitudes among masses for achieving the sustainable development’, she added. Earlier, Prof. Suchitra Saproo, Convener of Science Club, introduced the audience about the program. Prof. Suman Sharma, Head Department of Botany presented the formal vote of thanks. Visit of Hon'ble MoS for Education

Ms. Priya Sethi, Hon’ble Minister of State for Education visited Govt. College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu. Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College apprised her of the various skill development courses which have been started in the College to equip students with entrepreneur skills besides providing degrees. She also paid visit to ongoing works under RUSA. She appreciated the various courses being started by College to chisel the skills of students for their bright future. The courses which have been started under Skill Development Training Programme are Production of Bakery and Preserved Items by Food Science Department, Florist shop and Boutique Technology by Home Science Department to enable them to earn while you learn after completing their qualification. She appreciated the way the students are running canteen and taking keen interest in flower arrangement for the florist shop being run and managed by students of the Home Science & Food Science Department. She also gave suggestions to the Botany Department to beautify their botanical garden by planting new and rare varieties of herbal and medicinal plants

GCW Gandhi Nagar organizes Disaster Management Training

The NSS Unit of Govt College for Women, Gandhi Nagar organized one day Training on Disaster Management here on Friday. A team of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) led by Pramjit Kumar, Chief Warden and Alok Nanda, Deputy Chief Warden of Civil Defence, Jammu, gave live demonstration of disaster management and civil defence techniques among the students and staff of the college. Principal of College, Dr. Kiran Bakshi, who was Chief Guest on the occasion, said that civil defence training is important for every member of society to overcome different emergency situations more effectively and efficiently. “Youth and students especially the NSS volunteers can play a pivotal role in saving the people by spreading awareness about disaster management among masses”, she said. Thousands of students in college witnessed the live demonstration of fire fighting, shifting the victims to ambulance and other techniques of disaster management by involving the NSS volunteers. The SDRF team also displayed the equipments to manage disasters and saving the victims. Earlier, NSS Programme Officer Amitpal Kour introduced the audience about the program. NSS Volunteer Mehvish conducted the proceeding of the program whereas Prof. Neelam Thapa, another NSS Programe Officer, formally thanked the guests. Prominent among others present on the occasion were Prof. B.K. Gandotra, Prof. Mohinder Pal and Dr. Ashaq Malik.

Mahindra Finance, NSS Volunteers organize Tree Plantation at GCW Gandhi Nagar

Jammu, Aug, 27: NSS Unit of Govt. College for Women, Gandhi Nagar in collaboration with Mahindra Finance organized tree plantation in the College campus here today. Mahindra Finance, as part of Corporate Social responsibility donated about hundred medicinal and aromatic plant species to the college. A team Mahindra Finance officials led by Naved Khan, Regional Manager, along with staff and NSS Volunteers of College planted various plant species including Amla(Emblica officinalis), Amaltas(Cassia fistula), Rudraksha (Elaeocarpus ganitrus), Eliachi(Elettaria cardamomum, Gulmohar (Delonix regia) etc in the college campus. Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of College, who was Chief Guest on the occasion, appreciated the efforts of Mahindra Finance towards conservation of environment. She expressed her hopes for more such initiatives that benefit the society at large in the future. She also emphasized upon the NSS volunteers for planting more trees during the ongoing sadhbavana fortnight and taking proper care of these plant saplings. “Planting is not enough, caring is equally important”, she added. Short Term Skill Development Programme started in P.G Department of Food Science

Post Graudate Department of Food Science of GCW, Gandhi Nagar in collaboration with Food Craft Institute, Jammu started a week long short term skill development programme. On the occasion Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College was Chief Guest whereas Mr. Navneet Singh, Expert trainer from FCI Jammu was giving live demonstrations in Food Commercial Laboratory. Dr. Anuradha Gandotra, HOD Food Science welcomed the expert team from FCI and participants highlighting the importance of Skill Development as part of entrepreneur development. The main focus of programme is equipping the students for owing their own small scale food hubs. While inaugurating Dr. Kiran Bakshi appreciated the initiative of P.G Department of Food Science for training the students for their future endeavours to open up food hubs. Demonstrations of different food products which can be easily preserved for commercial purposes were made. Besides Dr. Shalini Sharma it was attended by students and faculty members of different streams of college.

GCW Gandhi Nagar initiates daily “Know Your Plants” Activity

Jammu, Aug, 24: The Department of Botany of Govt. College for Women, Gandhi Nagar initiated the daily “ Know your Plants” activity here today. Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of College formally inaugurated the initiative. While addressing the students and staff of Botany Department on occasion, she appreciated the efforts of Botany Department to create broader awareness about local flora among youth and students through this initiative. She said, this is more practical approach to boost interest of students in Botany (plants) and the environment at large while displaying one plant on daily basis. Later, Dr. Bakshi along with Prof. Suman Bala, Head, and staff of Botany Department planted saplings of Ginkgo biloba, a living fossil and Rudraksha (Elaeocarpus ganitrus ), a medicinally and religiously important plant species in the Botanical Garden of College. Skill Development for greater employability

In consonance with the vision of  Prime Minister of India Narinder Modi and the Chief Minister of J&K Mufti Mohd. Sayeed pertaining to National Skill Qualification Framework (NSQF) Govt. College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu, in first of its kind initiative, , is proposing to initiate academic diversification with introduction  of a unique business model in the field of Food Science & Technology, Floriculture and Boutique technology to inculcate in students-skill Proficiency, Competence and life long learning along with academic excellence, thereby contributing to their entrepreneurial skills and helping the students in improving their employability quotient as well as self – employment acuity.
Students of Food Science & Technology and Home Science Department of the college are going to be active partner of this conglomerate which shall have the faculty also to help fructification of this model.
Food – court to cater to appetite of day scholars, Flower bouquets and Boutique Outlets (ethnic as well as modern) under the expertise will be made operational. This would give practical experience to the outgoing students to start their own venture who thereby would act as job providers rather than job seekers. Initially the requirements of the college will be catered but later on it is proposed that the facilities shall be extended to out-source the requirement of other institutions as well.
Govt. College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu is successfully running B.Sc & M.Sc. Food Science & Technology and B.Sc. Home Science since many years. It is proposed to provide nutritious and healthy food items prepared under hygienic conditions to the students of the College on commercial scale.

Aim is to assist in the State Govt’s resolve to provide multiple pathways to young generations and promote Skill development outcome based learning.

Culmination of Two days National Workshop on “E-Content Development & Management”

Two days National Workshop on “E-Content Development & Management” culminated in Govt. College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu. On this occasion Ms. Priya Sethi, Hon’ble Minister of State for Education, Information & Culture was the Chief Guest in the valedictory session whereas Dr. Dalip Barad, Head Department of English, Bhavnagar University, Gujrat and Dr. Mahesh N. Jiwani, Associate Professor in the Department of Electronics Science from Saurashtra University were the Resource Persons and Dr. Jyoti Mahajan, Associate Professor, GCET, Jammu was the Observer for the event. Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College welcomed the Chief Guest, Resource Persons, Observers, dignitaries, participants, staff and students. In her address she visualized the mission of Hon’ble Prime Minister that we should all dwell in the digital world and become a part of technological revolution that were taking place in the world and blend technology and knowledge for its best expression. Dr. Anupama Gupta presented the report and highlighted the achievements and success of the workshop. Participants also shared their observations and the worthy observer also shared his views. Ms. Priya Sethi, Hon’ble Minister of State for Education, Information and Culture stressed upon the need of imparting the knowledge of teachers to students through the current ICT mode. She also stated that the digitalization has revolutionized the world of education to explore the new horizon and discover the undiscovered. E-proceeding of the workshop was also released in the form of CD. Prof. Neelima G presented vote of thanks and programme was coordinated by Dr. Romika Sudan in the morning session and by Prof. Neelam Thapa in the valedictory session.

Two days National Workshop on “E-Content Development & Management” began in Govt. College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu. On this occasion Prof. R.D.Sharma, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu, was the Chief Guest in the inaugural session whereas Dr. Dalip Barad, Head Department of English, Bhavnagar University, Gujrat and Dr. Mahesh N. Jiwani, Associate Professor in the Department of Electronics Science from Saurashtra University were the Resource Persons. The programme began by lighting the lamp and invoking the blessings of Maa Saraswati followed by welcome address by Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College. In her address she dwelt upon the need of equipping oneself with the digital world and teaching students via latest technology. Prof. Amit Pal Kaur introduced the missions and objectives of conducting this workshop on the innovative way of teaching the teachers while dealing with the net generation in the class. Prof. R.D.Sharma, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor exhorted the efforts of the organizers for organizing such an informative workshop which will enhance the teaching abilities and develop good communication skills to teach the students who come up with new ideas while belonging to the new generation of learners. In the first day two technical sessions were held on the topics – “Pedagogical implications: Using ICT tools in the Education” and “An Introduction to Authoring Tools and related web applications – for teachers”. It was attended by large number of participants, teachers and students from different corners of the country.

 

Govt. College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu organized a workshop on “Digital India”

On this event madam Principal, Dr. Kiran Bakshi inaugurated exhibition on Digital India. She appreciated the efforts of Prime Minister Sh. Narendera Modi for launching this project as this project is going to bring revolution in all the sectors including education. Our students will act as a ambassadors to disseminate the information to the masses regarding Digital India. The programme commenced with the lighting of lamp followed with the singing of the National Anthem. Dr. Surinder Sharma welcomed Resource Person, faculty members parents and students of the College and talked about the objective of organizing workshop on “Digital India”. Dr. Anupama Gupta, presented a PowerPoint presentation on “Vision of Digital India”. Prof.  Darvinder Singh Oberoi, Scientist E NIELIT Jammu was the Resource Person and he threw light on the importance of digitalization in every sector of the economy.

 Students presented their views on different topics such as Effective use of ICT for Efficient Education, Digitalization in Higher Education, Gurukul - Digitally Yours. Ms. Sakshi Bhagat was adjudged first where as Ms. Kritika Mengi and Ms. Simrandeep Kour secured second and third slot and Ms. Bharti Tak got the consolation prize. GCW GANDHI NAGAR CELEBRATES WORLD YOGA DAY

Jammu, 21 June, 2015: While joining the nation and world in first International Yoga Day celebrations, the NSS Unit of Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar commemorated World Yoga Day here today.
A team of yoga experts led by Prof. Uma Sharma, Vice President, Patanjali Yog Samiti, J&K demonstrated various yoga techniques and their benefits among the students and staff of college. Prof. Uma explained at length how yoga has changed lives of people without any medicine and how it is important in personality development besides numerous health benefits.
Principal of College, Dr. Kiran Bakshi, who was chief guest on the occasion, said that yoga is complete package for providing physical, mental, intellectual and spiritual growth. It provides the cessation of all the modifications of the mind and leads to Moksha. She further said that body is vehicle which leads man to achieve the final goal of salvation. A little attention to the body makes it disease free and brings ease and makes the life comfortable.

GCW GANDHI NAGAR OUTSHINES IN 3rd YEAR RESULTS BY BAGGING 10 OF TOP 20 POSITIONS IN SCIENCE/ARTS STREAM

In the 3rd year B.A/B.Sc results declared by the University of Jammu Govt. College for Women, Gandhi Nagar bags 10 positions in Science and Arts stream. Ms. Sipaj Jain stood 1st in Science stream by securing 85.57%, Ms. Roopali Arora, Ms. Surabhi Chalotra and Ms. Surabhi Sharma secured 4th , 6th and 7th positions respectively. Ms. Garima Jasrotia from Arts stream secured 2nd position whereas Ms. Aditi Magotra, Ms. Arushi Anthal, Ms. Sanam Sharief, Ms. Simran Khajuria and Ms. Harveen Kour secured 4th, 6th , 7th , 8th and 9th positions. It was a moment of great jubilation for the students and mentors at GCW Gandhi Nagar.
Principal of the college Dr. Kiran Bakshi congratulated students and the staff for the great achievement. UP GRADATION WORKS OF COLLEGE COMPLEX BEGAN IN GCW GANDHI NAGAR JAMMU

On this occasion, Hon’ble Speaker of Legislative Assembly and M.L.A. Gandhi Nagar Jammu Mr. Kavinder Gupta graced the occasion and initiated the up gradation work of College Auditorium. Meritorious students of the college were also felicitated, while addressing the audience Hon’ble Speaker Sh. PLACEMENT DRIVE AT GCW,GANDHI NAGAR JAMMU

Career Counseling Cell of Govt. College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, in collaboration with NSDC Udaan launched a placement drive. On this occasion Sh. Sanjay Bhardwaj, IMS Public Dealing Head was there to shortlist the students. A large number of students of B.A/B.Sc Final Year appeared and 15 students got selected for the various entrepreneurial programmes that will not only help them to be financially independent but also provide them great avenues for their future growth. It is an initiative under Udaan to provide job opportunities to the youths of J&K to engage them into the creative jobs.

 

15 DAYS COMPUTER LITERACY PROGRAM BEGINS AT GOVT. COLLEGE FOR WOMEN, GANDHI NAGAR, JAMMU.

Govt. College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, today started a short term computer course of 15 days for teaching as well as non-teaching staff of the college. The course is aimed to make the faculty computer savvy which is essential requirement of the hour. Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College, was the Chief Guest on the occasion. While speaking she considered it as a great step towards computer literacy which is the urgent need of the present society. Around 40 staff members (both teaching & non-teaching) participated and availed the opportunity provided by the College.

 

NCC WING OF GCW,GANDHI NAGAR CONDUCTED 10 DAYS YOGA CLASSES AT THE COLLEGE PREMISES

Jammu, 8 May, 2015: The Red Cross Unit of Government College for NCC wing of GCW, Gandhi Nagar conducted 10 days Yoga Classes at the College Premises from 30/4/2015 to 9/5/2015. Principal of the College Prof. (Dr.) Kiran Bakshi addressed the cadets on the culmination day of 10 days Yoga camp. She stressed upon the importance of Yoga in our daily routine and opined that the Yoga and Philosophy are inter-related, thereby enhancing the quality approach towards life. The NCC Cadets of all the units of the College i.e. Jammu Bn A coy, B coy, NCC Naval wing and NCC Srinagar Bn participated in the classes to make themselves well acquainted to celebrate the World Yoga Day which will be conducted on 21st of June, 2015.
The Cadets were trained by Lt. Babita Jamwal. ANO’s of the college Lt. Shivani Sharma and Prof. Poonam Rajput also guided the cadets and gave motivational lectures to the students. They emphasized that Yoga should not be restricted to these classes but cadets should make it indispensable part of their life.

Jammu, 8 May, 2015: The Red Cross Unit of Government College for Women,Gandhi Nagar celebrated Red Cross Day to commemorate the birth anniversary of founder of Red Cross Sir Henry Dunant here today.
On this occasion, a colourful programme was organized. A group of students were involved in reading message of Secretary General of Indian Red Cross Society, Dr. S.p. Agarwal, Prayer and Pledge followed by a lecture on the theme “Power of Humanity: The fundamental principles in action”.
Principal of College, Dr. Kiran Bakshi, who was chief guest on the occasion, lauded the Role of Red Cross being one of biggest humanitaria organizations that provides assistance to some 233 million people affected by conflicts, disasters and consequent poverty across globe each year.
Dr. Ashaq Malik, Co-ordinator of Red Cross Unit gave a detailed account of Red Cross through power point presentation starting from its inception in the year 1864 in Geneva, its journey in India 1920 and Jammu and Kashmir in 1963, its principles, the objectives, working and to its contribution to humanity. He also explained the life and works of founder of Red Cross who laid the foundation of International Humanitarian Law and shared first Noble Prize in 1901.
Prominent among others present in programme were Dr. Shiveta Gandotra,Prof. Shrotika Rajput, Prof. Haseeb, Prof. Samir Chadha, Prof. Fahad and Prof. Imran Khan.

 

WOMEN STUDIES CENTRE OF GCW, GANDHI NAGAR VISITED AN ADOPTED VILLAGE KAROTANA AT R S PURA.

Women Studies Centre of Govt. College for Women, Gandhi Nagar Jammu in its outreach programme visited an adopted village Karotana at R S Pura. Dr.Anjali Bhat, Convener, Women Study Centre interacted with the local women of the village and sensitized them with the various issues undermining their position in a society.She made them aware about the importance of girl child in a family for the smoother and safe functioning of the society. Girls student of the college also staged a Nukkad Natak depicting the deplorable condition of the women in a male dominated society. Prof. Jyoti and Prof.Pooja Sharma also delivered lectures focusing upon the gender issues and menace of female foeticide followed by healthy interaction. Dr. Kiran Bakshi Principal of the college applauded the efforts of the centre for taking this initiative in educating and promoting the girl awareness programmes among the village folks and taking our girl students to the four walls of the College to the field gives them a prqcticq! experience of the apathetic condition of girl child is the real success of this outreach programme. CAREER COUNSELING CELL OF GCW GANDHI NAGAR ORGANIZED A GUEST LECTURE ON COMMUNICATION AND PRESENTATION SKILLS

Career Counseling Cell of GCW Gandhi Nagar organized a Guest Lecture on communication and Presentation Skills. On this occasion Dr. Kiran Bakshi Principal of the College was the Chief Guest whereas Ms. Shikha Chopra, an expert in Finance and Control, got a certificate in training from New York University and having six years experience in corporate sector was the Resource person. Dr. Anjali Bhat welcomed the guests and spoke upon the need of developing communication and presentation skill for being successful in corporate world. Ms. Shikha Chopra in her presentation also laid stress upon the confidence building measures. She also stated that students need to exploit a latent potential which can help them to financially standup. It is a one step ahead to their economic empowerment by initiating from being a small entrepreneur to a big tycoon. Dr. Kiran Bakshi also advised students that small beginning always ends up in big achievements. IQAC OF GCW GANDHI NAGAR ORGANIZED A PARENT -TEACHER MEETING ON 2nd of May 2015

Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of GCW Gandhi Nagar organized a Parent -Teacher meeting on 2nd of May 2015. Parent-Teacher Meet is an important and integral component in developing quality relationship between parents and teachers. Prof. Seema Mir, convener, IQAC Cell in her welcome address stressed upon the quality relationship which thereby bridges the bond between students and parents. Prof. (Dr.) Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College emphasized upon this very fact that suggestions from the parents are equally welcomed for keeping this bond intact. She further informed that students are given ample opportunity to grow through NSS, NCC and various co-curricular activities. She welcomed the suggestions and drawbacks which would further play a major role in enhancing the academic and holistic development of the Institution. She also informed about Grievance and Redressal Cell where student’s problems can be redressed. She also made the parents aware about the various Add-on-courses which can further help them in their vocational growth. Parents actively participated in the interaction and they appreciated the steps taken by the Instution from the core of their hearts. They also suggested that a Parent-Teacher meeting should be a regular feature so that a strong bonding can be maintained between Parents and the Students. NCC CADETS OF GCW, GANDHI NAGAR,OUTSHINED AT THE YOGA CAMP HELD AT NAGROTA

NCC cadets of GCW, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu outshined at the Yoga Camp held at Nagrota. In this camp Cadet Nikita Singh and Cadet Simran got 1st prize in Drill Competition and Gold Medal for company senior respectively. Other two cadets Seema and Nisha selection for guard of honour and Cdt. Nilza also clinched 1st prize in Yoga. Cadets also showed their excellence in Cultural Programme and received appreciation. Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College congratulated cadets for their brilliant performance and exhorted them to maintain the tradition of show causing their talents and fetching prizes.

GCW, GANDHI NAGAR ANNUAL DAY CUM PRIZE DISTRIBUTION FUNCTION

GCW, Gandhi Nagar celebrated its Annual Day cum Prize Distribution function. On this occasion Jenab Naeem Akhter, Hon’ble Minister for Education was the Chief Guest, Ms Priya Sethi, Minister of State for Information, Education & Culture was the Guest of Honour, Ms. Sarita Chauhan(IAS), Commissioner/ Secretary, Higher Education Department was the Special Guest, Mrs. Mamta Singh wife of Hon’ble Deputy Chief Minister, J&K State and Prof. T.A Kawoos, Director Colleges were the special invitees. The programme began by lighting of the lamp followed by seeking the blessings of Lord Ganesha. Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the college welcomed the guests and presented the annual report of the college. In the report she gave the analysis of the spectrum of activities undertaken in the session 2015 and also the unprecedented leaps of success attained by the College. Worthy Chief guest and other dignitaries also released the six annual News letters namely E-Odyssey, Quest, IRIS, Humanity, Symphony, Horizon, Research Reporter and the brouchure titled “Wall Paintings of Ancient Temples of Jammu” prepared by Indian National Trust of Art & Cultural Heritage INTACH Jammu Chapter to preserve the ancient heritage of Jammu Temples. A mesmerizing cultural programme on the theme “Women in New Avtaar” comprising of Creative Dance, Martial Arts, Geetru – a traditional Dogri Geet, Contemporary Dance on Women Empowerment were the main attractions which spellbound the audience. Jenab Naeem Akhter, Hon’ble Minister for Education complimented students and faculty members for working in cohesive manner to climb the rung of success and stated that women play an important role in constructing a positive society free of all constraints, discrimination and temptations. He eulogized the Punjabi dance on martial arts and motivated girls not to restrict it to a mere dance form but learn martial art as a part of self defence. Ms. Priya Sethi, Hon’ble Minister of State for Education, Information & Culture also congratulated the students for their scintillating performance and also being the achiever of many prizes. Ms. Sarita Chauhan (IAS) also send her wishes. Later the dignitaries gave away prizes to the outstanding students in Sports, Literary, NSS, NCC and Cultural activities. Ms Sipaj Jain of B.Sc. GCW GANDHI NAGAR ORGANIZES GUEST LECTURE ON WILD LIFE CONSERVATION

Jammu, 18 April, 2015: The NSS Unit of Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar organized a guest lecture on Wild life Conservation to mark World Heritage Day, here today.
Prof. D.N. Sahi, noted Wild life Conservationist, who was Resource person and chief guest on occasion gave a detailed accounts about snakes ranging from their habitat, distribution, types, feeding, mating, birth and growth to their religious and cultural relevance. He described that out some 2700 species of snakes world over, only 500 (20 per cent) are poisonous, whereas in India of total 260 species 52 are venomous. Among the poisonous species four land species Cobra, Krait, Russell’s Viper and Saw scaled Viper which account for 98 per cent of total causalities by snake bite, while King Cobra, Banded Krait, Pit Vipers, Rear fanged Colubrid and some Sea snakes are other venomous snakes, he added. He attributed the snakes and their conservation to rich cultural and religious heritage.
Principal of College, Dr. Kiran Bakshi, who presided over the function said that coexistence of man and animal has been repeatedly emphasized in our scriptures. “Lord Shiva, prominent among our three gods, persona is never complete without a snake in his neck. This truly depicts the importance of snakes in our life cycle as they kill the rodents and smoothen our living”, she said.
Earlier, Dr. Ashaq Malik, NSS Program Officer introduced the audience about program. NSS volunteers Komal, Radika and Deepika conducted the proceedings of the program whereas Prof. Shrotika Rajput, NSS Program Officer, presented the formal vote of thanks. A large number of staff members and students especially NSS volunteers attended the program in college auditorium.

 

GCW GANDHI NAGAR ORGANIZES LECTURE ON ART OF LIVING

Department of Higher Education Jammu organized a lecture on Art of Living, J&K Colleges Courses – Intro Talks on “Examination & Stress Management” in GCW, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu. On this occasion Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College was the Chief Guest whereas Mr. Rohit Ranjan, Sr. faculty conducting Yes Plus T&E for Youth, Happiness programme and Arts of Living Yoga was the key note speaker. He focused on the state of mind of youth, to handle emotional stress and skills required for the success of human beings. He motivated students that better living is the blessed one and that can be achieved through domain of knowledge and soft skills. He also stressed that it is important to be happy rather than being successful. Mr. Carlo and Mr. Manjeet also shared their views upon success in life. Dr. Kiran Bakshi while addressing the students advised them to shun the stress from their life for peaceful living. It is the only success mantra which relieves us from the negativity, pessimism and lack of zeal. Mr. Ajay Kapoor coordinated the programme and it was attended by students and faculty of the College.

 

GCW GANDHI NAGAR ORGANIZES AWARENESS PROGRAM ON ANIMAL PROTECTION

Jammu, 13 April, 2015:TheNSS Unit of Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar in collaboration withREHAI- freedom for animals, organized an awareness program on Animal care on Saturday.
To mark another year of spreading compassion by Federation of Indian Animal Protection Organizations (FIAPO) under its Living Free program, an awareness program on animal protection and care organized at Jammu which is part of the 24 cities where regular outreach is being conducted to sensitize consumers about the inherent cruelty in the consumption of animals products.
The NSS unit of the college led by NSS Programme Officers Prof. Shrotika Rajput and Dr. Ashaq Malik, along with volunteers of REHAI headed by its founder, Malvika Kalra, motivated students to actively discuss the impact of our food choices on health, the animals and the environment. Students also signed on the Day of Living Free banner and sketched on the theme: Freedom for animals.
Principal of College, Dr. Kiran Bakshi, appreciated the efforts of Rehai for their concern towards animal care and protection. She emphasised upon the NSS volunteers in particular and students and youth in general to play key role in bringing the awareness about animal protection and care among masses.
Malvika Kalra, said that though people are bound by social conditioning and religious interpretations in their dietary choices, animal protection organizations are asking people to follow their heart instead and leave animals off their table. Rehai volunteers Srijan Anand, Rampal and Seetu were also participated in the event. The program shall continue for a month in College, said one of NSS Programme Officers.

 

LANGUAGE CLUB OF GCW, GANDHI NAGAR Nagar ORGANIZED AN EXTENSION LECTURE ON THE TOPIC “FEMINISM IN URDU LITERATURE”.

Language Club of GCW, Gandhi Nagar under the aegis of Department of Urdu organized an extension Lecture on the topic “Feminism in Urdu Literature”. On this occasion Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College was the Chief Guest whereas Dr. Mushtaq Ahmed Wani, a well known writer and scholar was the Resource Person. The programme began by welcome address by Dr. Daljeet Verma, HOD Urdu who stressed upon the need of participation of women writers in Urdu for the best expression of sentiments, feelings and pathos. Dr. Mushtaq Ahmed Wani in his guest lecture traced the concept of feminism in Urdu Literature since its inception. He also narrated the short story “Beti” to throw light upon the role of daughters in the family, their feeling, their attachment and a sense of sacrifice, which deeply touched the heart of the audience. Dr. Kiran Bakshi got emotional and encouraged the girl students to prove their worth by being a good daughter, a distinguished writer, the best entrepreneur and herald the new era of women empowerment. It was attended by students and staff of the College.

 

NAVAL CADET OF GCW, GANDHI NAGAR, JAMMU SECURED 2ND POSITION AND CLINCHED SILVER MEDAL IN SKING CAMP AT GULMARG IN KASHMIR

Ms. Tammana Manhas, Naval Cadet of GCW, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu attended SKING CAMP AT GULMARG IN KASHMIR. She secured 2nd position and clinched Silver medal. Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College congratulated the cadet for her hard work and bringing laurels to the institution. She also wished her a good luck for her future endeavours. Prof. Poonam Rajput, ANO, 1st J&K Naval Unit, NCC also applauded the cadet for her best performance.

 

GCW GANDHI NAGAR IN ITS OUTREACH PROGRAMME VISITED AN ADOPTED VILLAGE KAROTANA AT R S PURA

Women Studies Centre of Govt. College for Women, Gandhi Nagar Jammu in its outreach programme visited an adopted village Karotana at R S Pura. Dr.Anjali Bhat, Convener, Women Study Centre interacted with the local women of the village and sensitized them with the various issues undermining their position in a society.She made them aware about the importance of girl child in a family for the smoother and safe functioning of the society. Girls student of the college also staged a Nukkad Natak depicting the deplorable condition of the women in a male dominated society. Prof. Jyoti and Prof.Pooja Sharma also delivered lectures focusing upon the gender issues and menace of female foeticide followed by healthy interaction. Dr. Kiran Bakshi Principal of the college applauded the efforts of the centre for taking this initiative in educating and promoting the girl awareness programmes among the village folks and taking our girl students to the four walls of the College to the field gives them a practical experience of the apathetic condition of girl child is the real success of this outreach programme. It was attended by members and students of Women Study Centre.

GCW GANDHI NAGAR ORGANIZED AN EXTENSION LECTURE ON “IMPORTANCE OF PUNJABI LITERATURE- A CRITICAL APPRAISAL OF NATAK AND POETRY”.

Department of Punjabi of Govt. College for Women Gandhi Nagar Jammu under the age is  of Literary club organized an Extension Lecture on “Importance of Punjabi Literature- A critical appraisal of Natak and Poetry”. On this occasion Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College was the chief guest where as Dr. Baljeet Kour, Associate Prof. Department of Punjabi, University of Jammu was the Resource Person. Dr Surjeet Kour, Department of Punjabi welcomed the Guest, Staff and Students and focused upon the role of Punjabi language in presenting the local color, aroma and belongingness.  . Dr. Baljeet Kour called this language as a language of one’s heart where everybody feels free to express one’s feelings, thoughts and emotions. In her lecture she also stressed upon the role of Natak and Poetry depicting the pain and trauma of separation, frustration, feeling of love and sacrifice.. Dr. Kiran Bakshi in her address urged students that regional Indian language like Punjabi sensitize our emotions,  stirs the feelings and appeals to our senses. GCW Gandhi Nagar organizes Awareness Programme on Disaster Management

Jammu, 19th March 2015: The NSS Unit of Government College for Women Gandhi Nagar Jammu in collaboration with J&K Fire and Emergency Services Jammu organized an awareness programme on Disaster Management here today.
A team of J&K Fire and Emergency Services Personnel led by S.C Verma, Divisional Fire Officer Jammu, demonstrated various techniques, skills and equipments required to manage the disasters effectively.
Principal of the College Dr. Kiran Bakshi was Chief Guest on the occasion. In her address she emphasized upon the importance of civil defence in society and expressed her hopes that students and youth can play a pivotal role in saving themselves and their family members during emergencies.
Earlier, Dr. Ashaq Malik, NSS Programme Officer, introduced the audience about the programme. Ms. Namrata Chib and Ms. Nishitha Mahajan conducted the proceedings of programme whereas Prof. Shrotika Rajput presented the vote of thanks. About 400 students of College and staff members attended the programme. Prominent among others who attended the programme were Prof. Seema Jolly, Prof. Irvinder, Prof. Balwan Singh, Prof. GM Choudhary and Prof. Joginder Singh.

 

GCW GANDHI NAGAR ORGANIZED A ONE DAY WORKSHOP ON “HANDWRITING SKILLS”

Language Club of GCW, Gandhi Nagar organized a one day workshop on “Handwriting Skills”. On this occasion Mr. Rakesh Hangloo, Scientific Officer from Forensic Department, Jammu was the Resource Person, Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Princpal of the College was the Chief Guest, and Prof. Nasreen, Principal, GDC Ganderbal was the Special Guest. Prof. Seema Mir, Head, Department of English discussed the need of inculcation of good writing skills for overall development of personality. Mr. Rakesh Hangloo in his power-point presentation made a very strong impression of writing from forensic point of view. He stated that writing depicts the overall qualities of the human beings. Backward stroke depicts instability, forward strokes - over confident, upright stroke - balanced personality of the human beings. Dr. Kiran Bakshi hailed this lecture as powerful medium of educating students about different aspects of their personality reflected by hanwriting. She also stated that this lecture will motivate our students to write neatly and carefully. It was attended by the students, staff and members of the Language Club. Dr. Vandana Khajuria presented vote of thanks.

 

GCW GANDHI NAGAR ORGANISED AGUEST LECTURE ON "RIGHTS OF WOMEN IN MARRIED LIFE"

Legal Literacy Club/Legal Cadet Corps of GCW Gandhi Nagar organized a Guest Lecture on “Rights of Women in married life”. On this occasion Justice J.P Singh , Legal Advisor, Jammu University, NHPC, Senior Advisor of CBSE was the Resource Person whereas Mr. S.K Jain, Social Activist and Yoga Expert was the guest of honour. Prof. Shruti Sharma, Convenor of the Club welcomed the Resource Person, Guest of Honour, Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College, Staff and Students of the College and talked about the aims and objective of constitution of this club for equipping young girls of College about their rights and duties. Justice J.P Singh in his lecture talked in volumes about the education of building Women’s Self in a hostile environment. He made the Girls to understand that the dignity of women is an important aspect of our social fabric and providing them equality is our fundamental right. And we all should fight in constructing a good self image for living a life of self esteem, self respect and individuality. Our worthy Guest of Honour Mr. S. K jain also shared his views. Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College while addressing the students urged them to use their tools of knowledge i.e Rights judiciously whenever the time and situation demands. WOMEN STUDY CENTRE OF GCW GANDHI NAGAR CELEBRATED THE WOMWN'S DAY.

Women Study centre of GCW Gandhi Nagar celebrated the Women’s Day. On this occasion, Mr. Rakesh Sharma, IGP, Frontier Headquarter, BSF Paloura Campus Jammu was the Chief Guest, Prof. T.A Kawoos, Director Colleges, Higher Education Department was the Guest of Honour, Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal, GCW Gandhi Nagar presided over the function whereas Ms. Pratibha Sharma, Alumni of this College was the special guest. The programme began by lighting of lamp followed by invoking the blessings of Goddess Saraswati. Dr. Kiran Bakshi welcomed the Guests, Staff and students and spoke upon the relevance of celebrating Women’s Day as a mark of dignity, respect and gratitude to all the Women. Dr. Anjali Bhat, Director Women Study Centre read the report and focus upon all the activities undertaken by this Centre to sensitize Girls Students by holding workshops, organizing guest and extension lectures, adopting villages and through different kinds of programmes awared girls about their rights and duties. A colorful cultural programme including Bhangra Celebrating birth of Girl Child, Nukkad Natak on Eve teasing, Dogri Skit on Female Feticide and many more programs all centered upon Women Struggle for empowerment and carving out niche for themselves. Our worthy Chief Guest Mr. Rakesh Sharma appreciated the role of Women in the lives of all the human beings and encouraged Girls Students to raise their voice against the injustice against Women. 10 days workshop on “Artistic Ceramic Pot” INAGURATED IN GCW GANDHI NAGAR

Govt. College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu inaugurated a 10 days workshop on “Artistic Ceramic Pot”. On this occasion Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College was Chief Guest whereas an eminent sculpturer and former Professor Bishamber Mehta was the key person to train the students and staff members of this ancient old craft. The purpose of organizing this workshop was to popularize the art of making clay pots, artistic flower vase, bowls and so many other items on mechanical wheel. Dr. Kiran Bakshi in her address urged students that education not only make them capable to take degrees but it also hones their skill, make them perfect by involving them in all these kinds of activities and this workshop serves the purpose of mingling the old art form with the new ones. Earlier a one day exhibition cum sale was displayed on 11th of February, 2015 which attracted the students with enthusiasm and interest. On their popular demand it has been organized to skill our young students with this dwindling talent.

GUEST LECTURE ON THE TOPIC “CURRENT TRENDS IN MICROBIOLOGY”.

Department of Bio Technology of GCW Gandhi Nagar Jammu under the ageis of Science club in collaboration with J&K State Council for Science and Technology organized a Guest Lecture on the topic “ Current Trends in Microbiology”. On this occasion Dr. Kiran Bakshi Principal of the College was the chief Guest, Mr. Shafat Sultan, Additional Director, DST was the special guest whereas Dr. B. K Bajaj, Associate Prof. in Biotechnology, University of Jammu was the resource person. Prof. Kiran Bala, Head, Department of Biotechnology welcomed the Guests and also introduced the students about new trends of Micro Biology.
After a PowerPoint presentation by Mr. B.K Bajaj, students were also given Merits and Cash awards for winning the meritorious positions in different kinds of activities like Poster Making, Symposium, Quiz Competition organized by Science Club. Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College congratulated the students and encouraged them to actively participate in the future contests also. Ms. Sunita Razdan, Asst. Director, DST and the other members of the Science Club were also present.

 

10 days 2nd NSS WINTER CAMP CONCLUDES AT GCW GANDHI NAGAR

Jammu, 23 February, 2015: The ten days second NSS winter camp jointly organized by NSS Unit 1 and 2 of Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu concluded here today.
On the concluding day, a rally on No Use of Polythene and Noise pollution was organized. Principal of College, Dr. Kiran Bakshi flaged off the rally which went around the college vicinity while raising awareness slogans and displaying placard on No use of polythene bags and noise pollution.
On 21st February, the NSS Volunteers led by NSS Programme Officers Dr. Shiveta Gandotra and Prof. Shrotika Rajput, visited old aged home at Amphalla, where they interacted with elderly and distributed clothes and food items among them. They also presented a musical bonanza there.
On February 20th, a guest lecture on animal care with special focus on going vegetarian was organized. Malvika Kalra, animal rights activist, was the resource person on occasion.
On February 19th, Dr. Muzzafar Khan, Psychologist from Drug De-addiction Centre, Srinagar, delivered a guest lecture on Drug De-addiction.
On February 18th, a lecture on Stress Management was delivered by Dr. Shiveta Gandotra, Assistant Professor in Department of Psychology of the college.
On February 17th, Painting competition among the NSS Volunteers was held on No Polythene use in which Usha Jodha, Simran Thakur and Nidhi Dalmotra were adjudged as 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively.
A cleanliness drive focusing Swach Bharat Abhiyan was organised in the college campus on February 16th.
On 13th and 14th, February, two day workshop on health and yoga was held. Prof Uma Sharma, Vice President, Patanjali Yog Samiti, J&K & Dr. N.K Sharma Chief Physician Indian Naturopathy Hospital, Jammu were the resource persons who enlightened the NSS volunteers with the importance of yoga in day to day life.
On February 12th, Padam Shri S.P Varma, President Gandhi Global Family delivered a lecture on Peace and non-violence.
Later, today, a valedictory function was organized where volunteers reflected their experiences during 10 days camp. Dr. Kiran Bakshi, who was Chief Guest on the occasion, appreciated the successful accomplishment of the camp. She expressed her hopes that NSS volunteers can play pivotal role in community service especially empowering weaker sections of society by extended volunteerism and passion to serve others.
Prominent among others present on the occasion were Prof. Nazia Rasool, Dr. Rozy Bamba and Dr. Ashaq Malik.
Shramdhan abhiyan and plantation drive were the other activities during the 2nd 10 days camp organized by NSS Unit 1st and 2nd between 12th to 23rd February, 2015 whereas NSS Unit 3rd has already completed similar NSS camp in winter break

 

LITERARY CLUB OF GCW GANDHI NAGAR ORGANIZED A LECTURE ON THE TOPIC “VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN

Literary club of GCW Gandhi Nagar organized a Lecture on the topic “Violence against women”. On this occasion, Dr. Kiran Bakshi Principal of the College was the chief guest whereas Prof. Shivani Manchanda, was the Resource Person. Dr. Vandana Khajuria welcomed the worthy chief Guest and gave an introduction of educating the girl students of the college about the different kinds of violence prevalent in society. Dr. Kiran Bakshi in her address implored students to strengthen the status of women in a society by stiff opposition to the conventions and stereotypical norms that were thrust upon them. Prof. Shivani Manchanda through her PowerPoint presentation sensitized the students with the different issues that had marred the Women’s position and dignity. The Lecture was followed by interactive session where the students shared their own experiences. Amongst others Dr. Shruti Sharma, Convener, Literary Clubs, Prof. Seema Mir, Convener, IQAC, Prof. Sujata Slathia, HOD, Economics, Prof. Shabnam Suri, HOD Education, Prof. Jugal Puri, HOD Hindi were present on the occasion.

 

A TOUCHING ADIEU WAS GIVEN BY THE 2ND YEAR BOARDER OF GCW, GANDHI NAGAR, JAMMU

A touching adieu was given by the 2nd year Boarder of GCW, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu in favour of outgoing students of B.A/B.Sc. Part III. On this occasion Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College was the Chief Guest. A variety of cultural programme was also organized. A beautiful amalgam of Ladakhi girls wearing Punjabi dress and performing Punjabi Bhangra spellbound the audience. Dr. Kiran Bakshi got emotional in their good bye party and wished them success in their future endeavours and bright prospects ahead. Ms. Mitali Rathore was adjudged as Miss Hostlier GCW, Gandhi Nagar, whereas Ms. Neha Khajuria and Ms. Heena Mughal were declared 1st runner-up and 2nd runner-up respectively. The adjucator to this event were Prof. Hardial Singh, Department of Botany, Prof. Seema Sharma, Department of Education and Prof. Nazia Rasool, Head, Department of EVS. All the faculty members graced the occasion by their valuable presence. It was ended with a vote of thanks by Ms. Yasmeen Malik of B.A Part II.

 

FAREWELL ACCORDED TO OUTGOING STUDENTS AT GOVT. COLLEGE FOR WOMEN, GANDHI NAGAR, JAMMU

A touching farewell was organized by the 2nd year students of GCW, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu in favour of outgoing students of B.A/B.Sc. Part III. The function was chaired by Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College. She wished good luck, good fortune and beautiful future to the outgoing students and advised them to secure their future with good jobs and right decision making. A variety programme and beauty contest was also organized on this occasion in which Ms. Puneet Kaur, Ms. Diksha Sharma and Ms. Meenakshi Sharma were adjudged as Miss GCW, Gandhi Nagar, 1st runner-up and 2nd runner-up respectively. The adjucator to this event were Prof. Sujata Slathia, HOD Economics, Prof. Vandana Khajuria, Department of English and Prof. Nazia Rasool, Head, Department of EVS. Poster Making Competition on different themes of “Effect of Junk food on health, Genetically Modified Foods, Mal nutrition” organized at GCW,Gandhi Nagaar.

Science Club of GCW Gandhi Nagar Jammu In collaboration with Department of Science and technology organized a Poster Making Competition on different themes of “Effect of Junk food on health, Genetically Modified Foods, Mal nutrition”. On this occasion, Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College presided over the event and appreciated the creative talent of the participants and also urged them to use healthy food for healthy mind, body and soul.
Around 27 students of Food science, Science and Biotechnology participated. Students made beautiful Posters and projected out the harmful impact of unhealthy food habits on the life of the youngsters. The adjudicators to this event were Dr. Satinder Kour, HOD, Zoology, Prof. Kamlesh Slathia, HOD, Geography and Prof. Mala Bhasin, Botany Department. Ms. Paras Anand of B.Sc-II clinched 1st prize, Ms. Sonali of B.Sc-II got 2nd prize and Ms. Surjeet Kour of B.Sc Semester-II secured for herself 3rd prize. Besides this three consolations prizes were given to Ms. Aradhana of B.sc-II, Ms. Himani Choudhary and Ms. Deveani Suri of B.Sc Semester-II respectively.

 

GCW Gandhi Nagar organizes Guest Lecture on Gandhian Philosophy

Jammu, 12 February, 2015: The NSS Units 1 & 2 of Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu organized a guest lecture on Gandhian Philosophy to kick start the NSS 10 days winter camp here today.
Padam Shri, S.P. Varma, President of Gandhi Global Family, who was chief guest and resource person on the occasion, spoke at length on the Gandhian Philosophy of life. He underlined the need of inculcating spirit of truth and non-violence among the masses especially younger generation to create a culture of tolerance, non-violence and understanding for peaceful co-existence of all.
Principal of the college, Dr. Kiran Bakshi, who presided over the function, appreciated the efforts of Mr. Varma in promoting Gandhian values which are so relevant in all societies in the world today.

Home Science Deptt. and Science Club of GCW, Gandhi Nagar Jammu organized an Intra College Symposia on the topic "Female Foeticide" in collaboration with J&K Council for Science and Technology, DST Jammu on 6th Feb,2015. The Principal of the College , Dr. Kiran Bakshi was the Chief Guest on the occasion. Dr. Sudha Gupta HOD, Deptt. of Home Science welcomed the Chief Guest , participants, students and faculty of Science Club and threw light on the relevance of this horrific practice of female foeticide that shows no signs of abating.
Dr. Kiran Bakshi in her address lauded the efforts of faculty and the students for actively participating and making the event successful one.
She stressed that female foeticide has become a wide spread social evil which needs to be checked and asked the students to work together as informed community to abolish such evils acts. 15 students participated in the event. 1st 2nd and 3rd Prizes were given to Shaheen Karim, Anjum Choudhary and Mandeep sandhu whereas Prabjyot Kaur, Ourusa and Manisha Sharma got consolation Prizes. NCC Cadet, NSS Volunteer bring laurels to GCW Gandhi Nagar

Jammu, February 6, 2015: NCC Cadet, Srijana Sharma of Naval Wing and NSS Volunteer, Komal Sharma of Govt Collkege for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu, who attended Republic Day Parade, brought laurels to the institution as well as to the J &K contingent.
Principal of the College, Dr. Kiran Bakshi, congratulated both the students for their hard work dedication and strenuous effects which made them to shine in Republic Day Camp held at New Delhi. As the mark of bestowing honour both have been invited to President House and were part of P M’s rally Cadet Srijana also visited DG House and CNS ( Chief of Navy Staff). She has given her best in ship modeling, Quiz Competition on “Cancer awareness” line area Competition etc. She helped J & K contingent to secure IInd position in all India level.
NSS Programme Officers, Dr. Shiveta Gandotra and Dr. Ashaq Malik, and ANO, Ist J &K Naval Wing, Prof. Poonam Rajput encouraged the achievers for rendering best service and also gave credit of their success to instructors at RD camp for their rigorous training.

 

GCW Gandhi Nagar organized Alumni Meet

Internal Quality Assurance Cell of GCW Gandhi Nagar organized  Alumni Meet in the College Auditorium . On this Occasion Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College was the Chairperson. The Programme began with the lighting of the lamp accompanied by the Chair person Dr. Kiran Bakshi and executive body of Alumni Association namely Ms. Seema Shekhar  President, Prof. Renu Nanda, Vice-president, Prof. Satinder Kour, Secretary, Prof. Shiveta Gandotra, Joint Secretary and Ms. Vidisha Talashi, Treasurer. Dr. Kiran Bakshi extended a very warm welcome to the Alumnus  who had specially spared their valuable time from their buzy schedule to come and revoke once again the memory of the golden moment spent in Alma Mater. A large number of alumnus marked their gracious presence and shared their own reminiscences. Prof. Seema Mir Convenor, IQAC  focused upon the mission of conducting Alumni Meet in the College. They also interacted and shared their views and played fun games with R.J. Sarang of 92.7 Big F.M and tambola and happily passed their time together. On the demands of the Alumnus their respective teachers were also invited to create the same ambience of their student life.  Amongst them were present Prof. Chanchal Dogra, Prof. Chand Chopra, Prof. Sarla Kohli, Prof. Nalini Kohli,( Former Principal & Former, Director Colleges) and Ms. Urmil Badyal. Alumnus vowed to extend their  full cooperation for the growth and development of the Institution. They also submitted their feed back form and new ones also made registration. Prof. Satinder Kour presented vote of thanks and the programme was compered by Prof. Neelam Thappa.

 

GCW Gandhi Nagar Winner in Gymnastics

State Award Winner in Gymnastics Ms. Palak Kour Bijral of Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Semester-I posing for a photograph with the Principal of the College, Dr. Kiran Bakshi alongwith Convenor Prof. Surinder Sharma and Physical Director Mr. Sumnesh Sharma. She is the only girl fro J&K State who participated in Common Wealth Games 2014.

GCW Gandhi Nagar outshined NIC, Udaipur

Naval cadets of GCW, Gandhi Nagar outshined NIC, Udaipur. In this camp cadets performed brilliantly in all the contests. Cadet Bharti Sharma got a bronze medal in Solo Dance competition whereas Cadet Neha Kumari also enthralled the audience for her debating skills.

In another contest of All India Nau Sainik Camp  held at Karnatka, Cadet Malvika Raina got a gold medal in Ship Modelling competition whereas Cadet Kajal Raina participated in different contests and received accolades. Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College congratulated the cadets for their best display of talent by bringing laurels to the institution. GCW Gandhi Nagar celebrates National Youth Day

Jammu, 13 January, 2015:  The NSS Unit of Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu celebrated National Youth Day here on Monday.

On this occasion, a seminar on the life and teachings of Swami Vivekananda whose birth anniversary is celebrated as National Youth Day across nation was organized in college auditorium. A group of NSS Volunteers including Meenakshi Sharma, Heena Mughal, Sonika Thakur, Bhumika and Priya Sandhu spoke at length on the life and contributions of Swami ji to India and world society with emphasis on youth and personality development.

Principal of the college, Dr. Kiran Bakshi, also paid tribute to Swami Vivekananda by remembering his great works and advised the students and youth to follow his footsteps. Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, Sh. Shantmanu, who joined the programme later for Lohri celebration, also highlighted the contributions of Swami Vivekananda, and said his teachings are so relevant to youth today.

Earlier, NSS Programme Officer, Dr. Ashaq Malik introduced the audience about the programme. NSS volunteer Heena and Menakshi conducted the proceeding of programme whereas Prof. Shrotika Rajput presented vote of thanks.

10 days NSS Winter Camp concludes at GCW Gandhi Nagar

Jammu, 1 January, 2015: The ten days winter camp organized by NSS Unit of Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu concluded here on Wednesday.

On the concluding day the NSS Volunteers led by NSS Programme Officer Dr. Ashaq Malik along with Prof. Navdeep Bhalwal and Prof. Shiv Singh visited slum area in Baili Charan where they distributed cloths and sweets among the inhabitants. They took a brief review of literacy, health, sanitation, hygiene, socio-economic conditions and a damaged school in area. They interacted with the children about harms of drug addiction and the essence of education, sanitation and personal hygiene. The two presented a cultural bonanza to mark new year celebrations.  On return to college, a painting competition on Sustainable development was also organized.
