Professor Ved Ghai was a scholar of repute, known internationally for her work on Nilmat Puran and classical philosophy. In Sanskrit, she was the ultimate name and for a long time the Department of Sanskrit in University of Jammu was known by her name and work. Her imprint was there for a long time even after she left the Department. But being an academician of repute was just one part of her personality. She was the first real civil society activist of Jammu. Single handedly, she started her organisation Vasudev Kutumbakam that adopted slum children for educational purposes. She would visit various slum colonies in the city and motivate the parents to send children to school. She had a very simple idea of fund raising at that time. She would approach anybody and everybody for giving just one rupee for one day for sponsoring one child's education. That was in 1970s and 1980s. Gradually her organisation attracted more committed women - and this all-women's organisation contributed a lot for the underprivileged people, especially children. Her work was appreciated and her dedication, sincerity and honesty gave her a standing in society and an impeccable reputation. Her work both as an academician as well as a social worker was well recognised and she got the acclaim, appreciation and awards, including the state recognition of Padamshree. As a person she was a simple person who was as humble as one could be. In many ways she was a real Gandhian, not only in her attire but also in her philosophy of life. In her death, Jammu has lost a philosopher, a dedicated social worker, and most importantly a role model. Her post- retirement life was as meaningful as her life as a University teacher. She was a rare woman who had a mission which she followed and worked tirelessly in that direction. Rest in Peace now Professor Ved Kumari Ghai.
